Boilers make several distinct noises and they mean different things. Getting the description right matters, because it is what an engineer will ask, and some noises are routine while others mean the boiler is being damaged every time it fires.

- Listen to what the noise actually is.Banging and kettling like a boiling kettle, gurgling, whistling, humming or vibrating. They point at different causes, and describing it accurately saves a visit.
- Check the pressure gauge.Typically 1-1.5 bar when cold. Low pressure causes a range of noises and poor heating, and topping up via the filling loop is a normal user task on most boilers.
- Bleed the radiators if you hear gurgling.Air in the system causes gurgling and cold patches at the top of radiators. Bleeding is straightforward and safe. Re-check the pressure afterwards, as it drops.
- For kettling, expect a limescale or sludge problem.Deposits in the heat exchanger cause water to overheat locally and boil. It needs a power flush or descale by an engineer, and ignoring it shortens the boiler's life considerably.
- Note when the noise happens.On firing up, during heating only, on hot water only, or constantly. This narrows the cause more than anything else you can tell an engineer.

- Ignoring kettling — The boiler is overheating locally every time it fires. It shortens the life of the heat exchanger, which is the most expensive part.

Cause: Limescale or sludge restricting the heat exchanger — Fix: Check pressure, then book an engineer for a flush or descale. It will not resolve on its own and it damages the boiler.
Gurgling, with cold radiator tops
Cause: Air in the system — Fix: Bleed the radiators, then top the pressure back up to 1-1.5 bar cold.
Loud humming or vibration
Cause: Pump or fan problem, or loose pipework — Fix: Engineer. If it is clearly a pipe vibrating against a joist it can sometimes be clipped, but confirm the source first.
Whistling on hot water only
Cause: Restricted flow, often limescale in the hot water side — Fix: Engineer. In hard water areas this is common and a scale reducer may be worth fitting.
