Short answer
The red battery symbol does not mean the battery is low — it means the charging system is not putting anything back in. With the engine running, the car is drawing everything from the battery and will stop when that is exhausted. The usual causes are a failed alternator, a broken or slipping belt, or a bad connection. Stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on: the belt that drives the alternator often drives the water pump and steering pump too.
Almost every driver reads the battery symbol as a fuel gauge for the battery. It is not. It is a charging-system warning, and the distinction matters because the two problems behave completely differently: a weak battery lets you down when you try to start, whereas a charging fault lets you down while you are moving, which is much worse. Understanding what the alternator actually does explains both the warning and why the car keeps going for a while after it appears.

- Understand what the alternator is for.It is an engine-driven generator. It supplies everything the car uses while running — ignition, injection, lights, heater blower, wipers, screens, infotainment — and puts back what starting the engine took out of the battery. The battery's real job is starting the engine and buffering peaks; the alternator does the work the rest of the time.
- Read what the symbol is telling you.The battery symbol lights when the ignition is on and should go out shortly after the engine starts. If it comes on while running, the charging system has stopped supplying the car. The engine will continue on battery power alone until the battery is too low to run the ignition and fuel systems, and then it will stop.
- Reduce the load immediately.Turn off the heated screens, the heated seats, the air conditioning, the blower, the stereo and any charging phones. Keep the lights you legally need and nothing else. On a modern car this can meaningfully extend how far you get, and the difference between daylight in summer and darkness in rain is substantial.
- Decide honestly whether to keep driving.A short distance to somewhere safe is reasonable. A journey home across a county is not. If the engine stops on a motorway you lose power steering assistance and brake servo assistance along with it, which changes the car's handling exactly when you need it most. Recovery is the right answer more often than people accept.
- Listen and look for the belt.One belt commonly drives the alternator, the water pump and the power steering pump. Symptoms that arrive together — the battery light plus heavy steering plus a rising temperature gauge — point strongly at that belt rather than at the alternator itself, and mean you should stop immediately because the engine will overheat.
- Separate a charging fault from a flat battery.A flat battery gives dim lights, slow or no cranking and a car that droops when you turn the key, and the warning light behaves normally once running. A charging fault starts with the car running perfectly and then gradually dimming everything as the battery drains. The order of events is the clue.
- Note whether it flickers or stays on.A light that flickers at idle and goes out when you rev is a classic slipping-belt or worn-brush symptom rather than a total failure. A light that comes on and stays on regardless of engine speed usually means the alternator has stopped charging entirely. Tell the garage which one you saw, because it changes what they look at first.
- Have the charging system tested rather than guessing.A garage or parts shop can test the charging output in minutes, and the test distinguishes an alternator, a regulator, a belt and a battery. Replacing a battery because of a charging fault is a very common and expensive mistake — the new battery goes flat within days.
- Understand smart charging before assuming a fault.Many modern cars vary the charging voltage deliberately, backing off under acceleration and charging harder when you lift off, and stop-start systems monitor the battery closely. This means a battery-management warning message is not the same thing as the red charging symbol. Read the message on the dashboard rather than only the symbol.
- Check the simple things once it is stopped and cool.With the engine off, look for a belt that is visibly missing, shredded or hanging loose, and check the battery terminals are tight and free of white or green corrosion. Both are visible without touching anything hot or moving. Anything beyond that is a garage job.

- Warning-light colour is a triage system: red generally means stop or act now, amber means investigate soon. The battery symbol is red for a reason.
- If the car has been jump started and the light appears afterwards, suspect the charging system rather than assuming the battery just needs a run. An alternator cannot bulk-charge a deeply flat battery.
- Batteries and alternators fail in company. A failing alternator overworks a battery and a dying battery overworks an alternator, which is why both sometimes need replacing together and why a proper test beats replacing one and hoping.

- Treating the battery symbol as a low-battery indicator — It reports the charging system. A car showing it while running is on borrowed time, which a low-battery reading would not imply.
- Buying a new battery to fix a charging fault — The new battery will discharge in the same way within days. Test the charging output before spending anything on parts.
- Driving on with heavy steering and a rising temperature gauge — That combination usually means the belt driving the alternator, water pump and steering pump has gone. Continuing risks overheating damage that costs many times more than a belt.
If it doesn't work
Battery light on steadily with the engine running
Cause: The charging system has stopped supplying the car — Fix: Reduce every electrical load, drive only as far as somewhere safe, and have the charging output tested. Do not plan a longer journey on the assumption it will last.
Light flickers at idle, goes out when revved
Cause: A slipping or glazed auxiliary belt, or a worn alternator — Fix: Have the belt and tensioner inspected promptly. A belt in that condition is close to failing outright and it usually drives more than the alternator.
Battery light plus heavy steering plus rising temperature
Cause: The auxiliary belt has broken or come off — Fix: Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. The water pump has probably stopped, so continuing will overheat the engine. Call for recovery.
Car keeps flattening its battery but the warning light never comes on
Cause: A drain rather than a charging fault, or a battery at end of life — Fix: A different problem entirely. Short journeys, an accessory left powered or an ageing battery are the usual causes and the charging system is probably fine.
A battery-management message rather than the red symbol
Cause: Smart charging or stop-start battery monitoring — Fix: Read the actual message. Many cars report a battery in poor condition, or stop-start disabled, without the charging system being faulty at all.

How far can I drive with the battery light on?
There is no reliable figure — it depends on the battery's condition and on what the car is using. In daylight with nothing switched on it can be a fair distance; at night in rain with the heater and wipers running it can be very short. Treat it as enough to reach somewhere safe, not enough to complete a journey.
Is it the battery or the alternator?
A flat battery shows itself when starting: dim lights, slow cranking, everything drooping when you turn the key. A charging fault shows itself while driving: the car starts and runs normally and then gradually dims. A charging-output test settles it in minutes and is worth having before buying any part.
Will driving further recharge the battery once the light goes out?
If the light has gone out the charging system is working again, but an alternator is designed to maintain a battery rather than to bulk-charge a very flat one. After any deep discharge a proper charge from a mains charger does far more than a long drive.
Can I replace an alternator myself?
On some cars it is accessible and on many modern ones it is buried behind the belt drive, an undertray or a subframe, and the belt routing has to be exactly right. It is also a component where a poor-quality replacement fails quickly. This is ordinary garage work and worth having done properly.
