Short answer
A mitred joint is cut with a router in a worktop jig so the rolled front edge runs continuously round the corner. Three connector bolts sit in dumbbell-shaped recesses machined into the underside and pull the two halves together. Biscuits keep the surfaces level. The compound between the faces is a waterproof gasket, not an adhesive, and leaving it out is how joints swell.
Worktop joints are where most laminate kitchens eventually fail, and it is almost always for the same reason: the joint was made dry, or made with the wrong sealant, and water got into the chipboard core through the one place where the core is exposed by design.
Step by step
- Understand the two joint types.A butt joint is two square-cut ends meeting, with the exposed core covered by an edging strip. It is quick and it is what a square-edged worktop uses. A mitred joint is cut on a curve with a router and a jig so a postformed rolled front edge runs continuously round the corner.
- Know why a mitre is the standard on postformed tops.A postformed worktop has a rolled front edge. Butt two of them at a corner and the rolled edge stops dead against a flat surface, which looks wrong and leaves an awkward joint. The curved mitre carries the roll round the corner.
- Look at the underside recesses.Machined into the underside of both pieces, spanning the joint, are three dumbbell-shaped recesses โ a round pocket on each side joined by a slot. A connector bolt sits in each, its head in one pocket and a nut on a plate in the other.
- Understand what the bolt does.Tightening the nut draws the two pockets together and pulls the joint closed. It provides clamping force across the joint, and that is all. It does nothing about levelling and nothing about waterproofing.
- Understand what the biscuits do.Oval slots cut between the bolt positions take flat wooden biscuits. They keep the two surfaces flush with one another as the joint pulls up. Without them, one piece can pull up a millimetre proud of the other and you feel it every day.
- Understand what the compound does.Colourless worktop jointing compound goes on both cut faces before assembly. It is a waterproof gasket, not an adhesive โ its job is to stop water reaching the chipboard core through the joint, which is the only place the core is exposed by design.
- Follow the tightening order.Dry-fit and check the whole line first. Apply compound to both faces. Offer up. Nip all three bolts finger tight. Level the two surfaces with a straight edge and a soft mallet. Then tighten front to back, with the front bolt last, because the front 50mm is the only part anyone ever looks at.
- Wipe the squeeze-out before it cures.Compound that is wiped while wet leaves nothing. Compound left to cure on a laminate surface has to be scraped off, and scraping a laminate surface is exactly what you do not want to do.
Tips
- Worktop jigs are hired cheaply and are the only practical way to cut a mitre. The jig, a plunge router and a 12.7mm cutter with a 30mm guide bush is the standard combination โ and it is worth cutting a practice mitre in an offcut first.
- Clear or colour-matched worktop jointing compound is a specific product. Ordinary silicone in a worktop joint is not equivalent: it stays flexible, it squeezes out unevenly under bolt pressure, and it discolours.
- Butt joints with an aluminium or plastic joining strip are common in DIY installations. They are honest, cheap and quick, they show as a metal line, and they seal well if the cut edges are sealed first.
- Three bolts is standard for a 600mm deep top. Two is not enough at the front, and the front one is the one that matters visually.
Common mistakes
- Assembling a joint dry โ The chipboard core is exposed on both cut faces. Without a compound gasket, every wipe of the worktop wicks water into the joint, and the core swells and lifts along the line within a year.
- Tightening the front bolt first โ It locks the front edges in whatever position they happen to be in, and the visible part of the joint is then set before you have levelled anything. Front bolt last, always.
- Using silicone instead of jointing compound โ It stays flexible under the bolts, squeezes unevenly, and discolours in the joint line. Worktop jointing compound is a different product for a different job.
