Can I cut my own worktop for a sink or a hob?
Which worktop materials a householder can cut, why stone and quartz are absolutely not among them, and the four dimensions that make a hob aperture a safety matter.

Short answer
Laminate, compact laminate and solid wood can be cut on site by a competent person with a jigsaw or router, a straight edge and patience. Stone, quartz and engineered stone cannot — they are templated after the units are in and fabricated off site with wet diamond tooling. A hob aperture must also meet the hob maker's own clearance dimensions.
The boundary here is unusually clean, which is helpful. It is not about skill; it is about the material. A chipboard-cored worktop is a woodworking job. A stone or engineered stone slab is a fabrication job needing wet diamond tooling, support during the cut, and dust control against silica. There is no middle route.

Step by step
- Identify the material at a cut edge.Look at the sink cut-out or the end of the run. Chipboard core with a thin patterned skin: laminate. Uniform through the thickness with no core visible: compact laminate, solid surface, timber or stone. If in doubt, ask the supplier what it is before touching it.
- Treat stone and quartz as out of scope, completely.They are cut wet with diamond tooling on a supported bed. Dry cutting engineered stone produces respirable crystalline silica dust, which causes silicosis, and there is no domestic dust control that makes it acceptable. The slab also cracks if unsupported as the cut completes.
- Understand how stone is actually done.A fabricator templates on site after the base units are in and level, takes the template away, cuts and polishes the aperture in the workshop, and returns to fit. That is why a stone worktop has a wait of a week or two in the middle of a kitchen refit.
- Plan a laminate cut-out from the underside where you can.The decorative face chips on the up-stroke of a jigsaw blade, so cut from the underside where the aperture allows, or use a downcut blade from the top face. Score the line with a knife first on any face-up cut.
- Support both sides of the cut.The waste piece has to be supported all the way through, or it drops in the last centimetre, tears out a corner and takes some of the visible edge with it. Screw a batten across it or have somebody hold it.
- Drill radiused corners, do not cut them square.A sharp internal corner in a cut-out is a stress raiser, and a laminate top will crack from it. Drill a hole at each corner of the aperture and cut between the holes. Most templates specify a corner radius for exactly this reason.
- Follow the appliance template, not the appliance.Hobs and sinks come with a printed template and an aperture dimension that is not the same as the appliance's outer size. Use the template. Measuring the appliance itself gives an aperture that is too small every time.
- Check the hob's clearance dimensions before cutting anything.Hob manufacturers specify minimum distances from the aperture to combustible surfaces, to the wall, to a tall unit at the side and to the surface below. Those are safety requirements and they are in the instruction book. Cutting first and reading later is how a hob ends up unable to be installed.
- Seal every cut edge before the appliance goes in.The moment the cut is made and dust-free, seal the raw edge — full depth including the underside lip. This is the single step that decides whether the worktop lasts.
- Know when to stop and pay somebody.A single straight cut across a laminate top is well within reach. A run with two mitred joints, a sink and a hob, in an expensive worktop with no spare material, is a day's work for somebody who does it weekly and it is money well spent.
Tips
- Hire a worktop jig for mitres. Freehand routing a mitre is not a skill you develop on your own kitchen.
- Masking tape along the cut line reduces chipping on a face-up cut and gives you a surface to mark on that does not need cleaning off afterwards.
- Practise on the offcut. Every kitchen generates a piece of worktop long enough to make a test cut in, and a test cut tells you about the blade, the feed rate and the chipping before you commit.
- For solid wood, cut with a fine-tooth blade and expect to sand and re-oil the cut edge. Timber cut edges around a sink need more sealing than any other material here, not less.
Common mistakes
- Dry cutting quartz or engineered stone — The dust contains respirable crystalline silica and causes silicosis, which is irreversible. This is a genuine occupational disease with a domestic route, not a nuisance-dust warning.
- Cutting square corners in an aperture — A sharp internal corner concentrates stress and the worktop cracks from it, sometimes months later. Drill radiused corners and cut between them.
- Cutting the hob aperture before reading the hob instructions — Hob manufacturers specify aperture size and minimum clearances to walls, tall units and the surface below. Getting those wrong means the hob cannot legally or safely be installed in the hole you have made.

Can I cut a quartz worktop myself?

Can I cut a laminate worktop for a sink?
Yes, with a jigsaw and a downcut blade or with a router and a template, cutting from the underside where possible, supporting the waste, drilling radiused corners, and using the sink's own template for the aperture. Seal the raw edge immediately afterwards.
Why does a stone worktop have to be templated?
Because it is cut and polished off site and cannot be altered afterwards. The fabricator has to record the actual shape of your walls and units, which is only possible after the base units are physically in position and level.
