Do bark and wood chip steal nitrogen from the soil?

On the surface, effectively no. Dug in, badly — and the difference is entirely about how much of the wood is in contact with soil.

Short answer

Microbes decomposing wood need nitrogen, and they take it from wherever the wood touches soil. As a surface mulch that contact zone is a few millimetres thick and roots never notice, which is why bark mulch around shrubs is standard practice. Rotavated or dug into the top 200mm, the contact zone becomes the whole root zone and the crop goes pale and stunted for a season or two.

Nitrogen robbery is real, widely misunderstood, and the source of a lot of unnecessary caution about a material that is often free. The mechanism is straightforward: wood is almost all carbon and almost no nitrogen, and the bacteria and fungi that break it down need nitrogen to build their own bodies. They take it from the surrounding soil. The only question that matters is how much soil is 'surrounding'.

Where wood chip actually takes nitrogen from, and where it does not

Step by step

  1. Understand the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio.Fresh wood chip is around 400 to 600 parts carbon to one part nitrogen. Soil microbes work best at around 25 to 1. To process the wood they scavenge nitrogen from the soil until the balance is met, and it is unavailable to plants while it is inside microbial bodies.
  2. Note that the nitrogen is borrowed, not destroyed.As the wood finishes decomposing and the microbial population dies back, that nitrogen is released again — usually with interest, because the organic matter left behind holds it better than the soil did. The problem is entirely one of timing, over one to two seasons.
  3. Understand why surface mulch is safe.Only the bottom few millimetres of a mulch layer touch the soil. That thin interface is where nitrogen is drawn from, and plant roots are almost all well below it. A 75mm bark mulch around shrubs, trees, fruit and established perennials causes no measurable problem, and this is why the practice is universal.
  4. Understand why incorporation is not.Rotavate or dig chip into the top 200mm and every chip is now surrounded by soil. The interface is the entire rooting depth, and the crop competes with microbes for nitrogen across all of it. Plants go uniformly pale, oldest leaves first, and stunt. This is a genuine season-losing mistake.
  5. Rank the materials by how much they lock up.Fresh sawdust and shavings are worst, because the particle size is small and the total surface area enormous. Fresh wood chip next. Composted or aged bark much less. Leaf mould and finished compost effectively none — they have already been through the process.
  6. Age the material if it is going into soil.Stacked for a year, ideally with grass clippings or manure mixed in to supply the nitrogen, wood chip becomes a genuinely useful soil amendment with no drawdown left. This is what 'composted bark' on a bag means.
  7. Compensate if you must incorporate fresh material.A nitrogen-rich fertiliser applied at the same time offsets the drawdown — chicken manure pellets, dried blood, or a high-nitrogen general feed. It is a workaround rather than good practice, and ageing the chip first is better.
  8. Keep fresh chip off soft young plants regardless.Not because of nitrogen, but because fresh chip from some species can suppress germination, and a thick chip mulch on a vegetable bed is difficult to sow or plant into. Use compost on vegetable beds and save the chip for paths, shrubs and trees.

Tips

  • Wood chip is often free from a tree surgeon working locally, and it is the best path-surfacing material there is. Laid over cardboard on a path it lasts two or three years and improves the soil beneath.
  • Ramial chipped wood — young branch wood under about 70mm diameter, chipped with its leaves and bark — is much less carbon-dominated than trunk chip and breaks down far faster. It is the good stuff, and it is what most arborist chip actually is.
  • Chip from walnut and eucalyptus contains growth-inhibiting compounds and is better composted for a year before use near sensitive plants. Conifer chip is fine and only very mildly acidifying.
  • The drawdown at a surface interface is real but tiny, and it actually helps in one situation: a thin layer of fresh chip on a path or a border suppresses weed seedlings partly by starving them of nitrogen at the surface.

If it doesn't work

Cause: Nitrogen drawdown across the whole root zone — Fix: Apply a nitrogen-rich fertiliser at the pack rate and repeat during the season. The bed recovers as the wood finishes rotting, usually within one to two seasons, and is better afterwards than before.

Cause: Fine chip worked into the sward, creating a much larger contact area than a surface layer — Fix: Rake off what you can and apply a nitrogen feed. Chip belongs on paths and borders, not on lawns.

Seeds failing to germinate in a bed mulched with fresh chip

Cause: Physical difficulty plus germination inhibitors in some species — Fix: Pull the chip aside to sow, or use compost as the mulch on ground you are sowing into and keep chip for permanent planting.
