What are all the wires in my ceiling rose for?
Why a UK ceiling rose usually has three cables and six or more cores, what each terminal does, and which one stays live when the switch is off.

Short answer
Most UK lighting is wired loop-in: the permanent live runs from rose to rose, so each rose has a cable in, a cable on to the next fitting, and a cable down to the switch. The loop terminal joins all the permanent lives and never feeds the lamp; the switched live terminal is fed back from the switch and does. The loop terminal is live with the switch off.
People open a ceiling rose expecting three wires and find nine. Nothing is wrong — it is the standard British loop-in arrangement, which saves cable by carrying the permanent supply from fitting to fitting rather than from a junction box. Understanding it in advance turns a confusing tangle into three obvious groups.

Step by step
- Count the cables, not the cores.Three cables is the classic middle-of-the-run rose. Two cables is usually the last fitting on the circuit. Each cable is twin-and-earth: two insulated cores plus a bare earth.
- Identify the switch drop.One cable goes down the wall to the light switch. Its two cores are the permanent live going down and the switched live coming back. In old cable that is red down, black back; in new cable, brown down, blue back — and the returning core should be sleeved or flagged brown at both ends.
- Identify the loop or line terminal.The terminal where the permanent lives from the incoming cable, the outgoing cable and the switch drop are all joined. Nothing from this terminal goes to the lamp. This is the terminal that is live regardless of the switch.
- Identify the switched live terminal.One core from the switch drop lands here, and from here a core goes to the lamp holder. This is the only live conductor the switch controls.
- Identify the neutral terminal.The neutrals from the incoming and outgoing cables are joined here, and one goes on to the lamp holder. In old cable these are black; in new cable, blue.
- Identify the earth terminal.All bare earth conductors joined together and sleeved green-and-yellow. On older lighting circuits there may be no earth at all, which limits what fittings can be installed.
- Understand what a two-cable rose means.Either the last fitting on a circuit — one cable in, one cable down to the switch — or a fitting fed from a junction box elsewhere, in which case one cable is the permanent supply and one is the switch drop, or the whole fitting may be fed already-switched.
- Understand why this matters when changing a fitting.Most decorative fittings have three terminals, not four. The permanent loop conductors have no home in them, so they must be joined separately in a maintenance-free connector or the original rose base retained. Ignoring this is what leaves twisted joints in ceiling voids.
Tips
- Photograph before you disturb anything, from two angles, with the cover off but nothing disconnected.
- A rose with a cable that goes nowhere obvious may be feeding a second light on the same switch — worth working out before you rewire the terminals.
- If the roses have small plastic connectors added by a previous owner, that is a sign of amateur alteration and a reason to have the circuit tested.
Common mistakes
- Assuming the black or blue core is neutral — In a switch drop, the returning core is the switched live. It is a line conductor in a neutral colour, and whether it has been sleeved brown depends entirely on who did the work.
- Connecting the loop terminal to the lamp — The lamp is then permanently on and the switch does nothing. It is a common outcome of reassembly from memory rather than photographs.
- Believing the fitting is dead because the bulb is out — The loop terminal is fed directly from the circuit. Removing the bulb affects nothing at all upstream of the lamp holder.
If it doesn't work
Light comes on with the switch but also stays dimly on when off
Cause: Illuminated or neon-indicator switch leaking a small current through an LED lamp, or a two-way arrangement — Fix: Common with LEDs. Replace the switch with a non-illuminated one, or fit a bypass sold for the purpose.
Switch controls two lights that should be independent
Cause: Both fittings are fed from the same switched live — Fix: Separating them means a new switch drop, which is alteration work for an electrician.
No earth conductor at the rose
Cause: Older lighting circuit installed without a CPC — Fix: Only Class II all-insulated fittings may be used there. An electrician can provide an earth if you want metal fittings.
Questions people ask
Why is my ceiling rose different — only three wires in one cable?
Some houses are wired with junction boxes in the ceiling void rather than loop-in at the rose. Then each fitting gets one cable carrying switched live, neutral and earth, and it is much simpler. Both methods are correct.
What is a batten holder?
A lamp holder mounted directly to the ceiling with the same terminals as a rose behind it. Common in lofts, cupboards and hallways. It follows exactly the same loop-in logic.
Can I add a second light off an existing rose?
It is an alteration to a circuit, and while not notifiable in an ordinary room in England and Wales, it needs the circuit's loading and the connection method to be right. Realistically this is an electrician's job unless you can test what you have done.
