How do I replace a light switch safely?
Isolating and proving dead, recording which wire goes where, and the difference between a straightforward swap and a job that is not yours to do.

Short answer
Power off at the consumer unit, prove dead with a tester, photograph the terminals before disconnecting anything, then transfer the wires one at a time to the same terminals on the new switch. Never work on a bathroom switch or change any wiring yourself.
Swapping a like-for-like light switch is a genuinely simple job. The care goes into isolating properly and into recognising the cases where it is not a simple job at all.

Step by step
- Check this is a job you may do.Like-for-like replacement in a normal room is permitted. Anything in a bathroom or shower room, any new circuit, and any change to the wiring is notifiable under Part P and needs a registered electrician.
- Turn off the correct circuit at the consumer unit.The lighting breaker, not the switch on the wall. Then lock it off or tape over it with a note, so nobody helpfully turns it back on while your hands are inside the box.
- Prove the circuit is dead.A two-pole voltage tester at the switch terminals, after checking the tester itself works on a known live source. This is the step that matters most and the one most often skipped.
- Photograph the wiring before touching it.Several clear shots showing which conductor is in which terminal. This is your reference if anything comes adrift, and it is far more reliable than memory.
- Understand what you are looking at.A one-gang one-way switch has a common and one other terminal. Two-way has common, L1 and L2. Older UK wiring uses a red or brown as switched live and a black or blue as permanent live — the blue is not neutral here.
- Check the sleeving on the blue or black conductor.It should be sleeved brown or taped red to show it is live, not neutral. If it is not, sleeve it now. An unsleeved switched live is a genuine hazard for whoever works on it next.
- Count the cables in the box.One cable is a simple switch. Two or three usually means it is part of a two-way or intermediate arrangement, or there is a loop-in at the switch. More cables means more care and a clearer photograph.
- Stop if the wiring looks old.Rubber, fabric or cloth insulation, or any conductor that crumbles when moved, means the installation needs assessing by an electrician. Do not carry on.
- Check the new switch matches.Same gang count, same way count, and a compatible backbox depth. A deeper switch on a shallow metal box leaves no room and strains the conductors.
- Transfer one wire at a time.Out of the old terminal, straight into the same terminal on the new switch. Doing them one at a time makes it almost impossible to get wrong.
- Check the earth.A metal switch plate must be earthed, and a metal backbox needs an earth link to the plate. Plastic switches on plastic boxes may have an earth to park in a terminal rather than leave loose.
- Tighten terminals properly.Firm, with no bare copper showing outside the terminal and no insulation clamped inside it. Loose terminals are the commonest cause of overheating at accessories.
- Fold the wires back carefully.Concertina them so nothing is pinched between the plate and the box. A trapped conductor is how insulation gets cut through and a short develops later.
- Restore power and test.Screws in, plate square, then power on. Test every position and, for two-way switches, every combination from both ends.
- Get an EICR if anything concerned you.Discolouration, a burning smell, loose terminals elsewhere or wiring you did not expect. An electrical installation condition report tells you the state of the whole installation.
Tips
- Photograph the terminals before you disconnect anything. It is the best two seconds you will spend.
- Prove dead with a tester, and prove the tester works first. The switch being off means nothing.
- A blue or black conductor at a switch is usually live, not neutral. Sleeve it brown.
Common mistakes
- Turning off at the wall switch rather than the consumer unit — The switch only breaks one conductor and the terminals remain live. People are killed doing exactly this, believing the circuit is off.
- Assuming a blue conductor is neutral — In a switch box the blue or black is normally the permanent or switched live in a two-way arrangement. Treating it as neutral leads to a short or a dangerous connection.
If it doesn't work
Light does not work after the swap
Cause: Wires in the wrong terminals — Fix: Isolate, prove dead, and compare against your photograph. Common goes to common.
Two-way switch only works from one end
Cause: L1 and L2 reversed, or common misplaced — Fix: Isolate and check the common terminal specifically — that is nearly always the one that is wrong.
Breaker trips when power is restored
Cause: Short circuit, usually a pinched or touching conductor — Fix: Isolate and inspect. Do not keep resetting the breaker — it is telling you there is a fault.
Plate will not sit flush
Cause: Wires not folded properly, or the box is too shallow — Fix: Concertina the conductors neatly. If it still will not fit, a deeper backbox is needed.
Switch feels warm
Cause: Loose terminal — Fix: Isolate immediately and retighten. A warm accessory is a genuine fire risk.
Questions people ask
Am I allowed to change a light switch myself?
In England and Wales, a like-for-like replacement in an ordinary room is permitted. Anything in a bathroom or shower room, any new circuit, or any alteration to the wiring is notifiable under Part P and needs a registered electrician.
Why is there a blue wire in my light switch?
It is almost certainly a live conductor, not a neutral — either the permanent live in a loop-in arrangement or one of the strappers in a two-way circuit. It should be sleeved brown to show this.
Do I need to earth a plastic switch?
The plate itself does not need earthing, but the earth conductor must be safely terminated rather than left loose. A metal plate or metal backbox does need earthing.
What if there are more wires than I expected?
Stop and photograph everything. Multiple cables usually mean a two-way, intermediate or loop-in arrangement. If you cannot identify what you are looking at, get an electrician.
