Why did my superglue not stick?
Six specific causes, each with its own symptom: too thick, too old, too dry, the wrong plastic, a contaminated surface, or the wrong load on a brittle adhesive.

Short answer
If it stayed liquid, the layer was too thick, the air was too dry or the bottle is old. If it set hard and then let go, the surface was contaminated, the plastic was polypropylene or polyethylene, or the joint was loaded in peel. Press the parts hard together so the film is a hairline — with superglue, thinner is stronger.
Cyanoacrylate is unusual among adhesives in that its failures are highly diagnostic. It cures by reacting with moisture, which means it cures from the outside of the film inwards; it is chemically fussy about what it is touching; and it is intrinsically brittle. Each of those produces a distinct symptom, and the symptom tells you which one you have.

Step by step
- Work out whether it failed to cure or failed to hold.Still wet, sticky or rubbery after a minute is a cure failure. Hard but came apart cleanly is an adhesion failure. Hard and shattered is a loading failure. These have completely different causes and there is no point treating one as another.
- For a cure failure, check the film thickness first.This is the commonest cause by a wide margin. Cyanoacrylate cures from the outside in and a thick pool skins over while the middle stays liquid, sometimes for weeks. Press the parts together hard so the joint closes to a hairline.
- Then check the age and storage of the bottle.Opened bottles have a short life, especially in a warm kitchen. A glue that has thickened, gone cloudy or cures sluggishly is past it. Store the next one cool, dry and tightly capped.
- Then check the humidity.It needs atmospheric moisture. A hot, very dry room in winter with the heating on, or a surface that has just been warmed with a hairdryer, can slow it noticeably. Breathing gently on the joint genuinely helps, and is a standard trick.
- For an adhesion failure, identify the plastic.Polypropylene and polyethylene — recycling marks PP, PE, HDPE, LDPE — resist cyanoacrylate almost completely without a specific primer. So do PTFE and silicone. No amount of pressing or extra glue changes that.
- Check for contamination on the failed face.If the cured glue came away clean from one side, that side was greasy, dusty, waxy or polished. Degrease with isopropyl alcohol, abrade lightly if it is smooth, and try again.
- For a shattered joint, look at how it was loaded.Standard cyanoacrylate is strong in shear and tension and brittle under impact and peel. A handle, a hinge, a spectacle arm or anything that flexes needs a rubber-toughened grade, an epoxy, or a mechanical reinforcement.
- Reinforce rather than re-glue where the part is genuinely stressed.A dry-fitted joint held by superglue with a fillet of gel and bicarbonate around it, or a pin, a wrap or a mesh-and-epoxy patch behind it, will survive where more glue will not.
Tips
- A joint that dry-fits perfectly is more than half the repair. Superglue rewards fit more than any other household adhesive.
- On end grain, porous stone or unglazed ceramic, thin superglue disappears into the material. Use gel, or seal the surface with a first application, let it cure, and then glue.
- Warming a very cold part slightly speeds the cure, but drying it with hot air can slow it, because it removes the surface moisture the reaction needs.
- Acidic surfaces and acidic cleaners slow the cure; alkaline ones speed it. Wiping with vinegar before gluing is actively counterproductive.
- If the same joint has failed twice, the answer is not a third attempt with the same product. Change the adhesive family or reinforce the joint mechanically.
If it doesn't work
Still liquid or rubbery after a minute
Cause: Too thick a film, or very dry air — Fix: Clean it off, press the parts hard together so the joint closes, and re-glue. If the fit is poor, use gel plus an activator instead of trying to fill with liquid.
Set hard, then peeled off one face cleanly
Cause: Contamination or an incompatible plastic on that face — Fix: Identify the plastic from its recycling mark. If it is PP or PE, change adhesive family. Otherwise degrease with alcohol, abrade lightly and rebond.
Set, then shattered when the part was used
Cause: Brittle failure under peel or impact — Fix: Use a rubber-toughened cyanoacrylate or an epoxy, and add mechanical reinforcement — a pin, a wrap, or a fillet behind the joint.
Went white and frosty all round the joint
Cause: Cyanoacrylate vapour settling on the surrounding surface — Fix: Cosmetic rather than a bond failure. Use less, clamp faster, ventilate more, or buy a low-odour grade. Polish the bloom off with a dry cloth or a mild abrasive.
It stuck to my fingers instead of the part
Cause: Skin is warm, damp and alkaline — the ideal cure conditions — Fix: Do not pull the fingers apart. Soak in warm soapy water and roll them apart gradually. Acetone works on skin that tolerates it, and never near the eyes or lips.

Why is my superglue still wet after ten minutes?
Almost always because the layer is too thick. It cures from the surface inwards, so a pool can stay liquid underneath a hard skin. Press the parts firmly together and use far less.
Does superglue work on plastic?
On rigid plastics such as ABS, polystyrene and PVC, yes. On polypropylene and polyethylene it does not work at all without a specific primer, and those are extremely common in household items.
Can I make superglue set faster?
An activator or accelerator spray sets it instantly, at the cost of some strength and toughness. Breathing on the joint adds moisture and helps. Heat generally does not.
Why does superglue stick to my fingers but not the thing I am fixing?
Skin is warm, slightly damp and slightly alkaline, which is exactly what the cure reaction wants. Most repair surfaces are dry, cool and often contaminated. It is a good reminder that surface condition matters more than the glue.
