Why does cotton shrink in the tumble dryer?
Three different mechanisms all get called shrinkage, and only one of them can be undone. Which one happened decides whether the garment is recoverable.

Short answer
Most first-wash shrinkage is relaxation — yarn held under tension during manufacture returning to its natural length, and it can often be eased back out while damp. Felting in wool is fibres locking together and is permanent. Heat degradation of elastane is also permanent. Cotton mainly does the first.
The useful question is not how to stop shrinkage but which kind you are dealing with, because the answers are completely different: one is reversible with patience, one is not reversible at all, and one is avoided rather than fixed.
Step by step
- Identify relaxation shrinkage.Fabric is stretched under tension while it is knitted, woven and finished, and it holds that tension until heat and moisture let it go. This is why the largest change is almost always in the first wash and dry, and why it then stops.
- Recover relaxation shrinkage while the garment is damp.Dampen the item, then ease it gently back towards its shape and let it dry flat. It rarely returns fully, but a noticeable amount comes back. Force applied dry tears the structure rather than easing it.
- Identify felting, and accept it.Wool fibres have scales that ratchet together under heat, moisture and agitation, and they cannot be unlocked. A felted jumper is a smaller, denser jumper permanently.
- Identify heat degradation in stretch fabrics.Elastane breaks down with repeated heat, so the garment does not shrink so much as lose its recovery — it goes baggy rather than small. Also permanent.
- Reduce the heat rather than skipping the dryer.It is the temperature that drives all three mechanisms. A cool or low setting costs time and prevents most of the damage.
- Take cotton out slightly damp.The last part of the cycle, when the fabric is already dry, is where the fibres get hottest. Finishing on a hanger avoids the worst of it and reduces creasing.
- Expect one round of shrinkage on new cotton and plan for it.If a garment or a length of fabric is going to shrink, it will do it early. This is why fabric is washed before it is cut for sewing.
Questions people ask
Can I stretch a shrunk cotton t-shirt back?
Partly, if it is relaxation shrinkage. Soak it, ease it back to shape while damp and dry it flat. Do not expect it to return to its original size.
Does washing in cold water prevent it?
It helps, but the dryer usually applies more heat than the wash does. If a garment matters, the drying step is the one to change.
