Short answer
Fold knits — jumpers, t-shirts, jersey — because a hanger concentrates the whole garment's weight on a small area of loops at the shoulders and stretches them permanently. Hang wovens and tailoring, because creasing at a fold line is the thing that damages them.
Most storage advice is presented as a list to memorise. It is easier than that: the question is only whether the fabric can carry its own weight without deforming. Knitted fabric is a mesh of loops that stretch under load; woven fabric is a stable grid that does not.

- Use the right hanger for the weight.A wide, shaped hanger spreads the load across the shoulder line. A thin wire hanger concentrates it in two points, which distorts even a woven jacket over time.
- Hang trousers from the hem or the waistband, not folded over a bar.A clip hanger at the hems lets gravity pull the creases out. Folded over a thin bar puts a hard crease across the knee area of both legs.
- Fold knitwear along existing seams.Folding along a seam hides the fold line in a place that is already a line. A fold across the middle of a plain front shows.
- Give hung clothes room.Compressed on a crowded rail, clothes crease against each other and cannot air. This is a common reason clothes come out of a wardrobe needing pressing.
- Treat heavy knits and beaded items as fold-only.Weight is the deciding factor, and anything heavy relative to its structure will deform. Beading and embellishment add weight in exactly the wrong places.
- Store long-term items flat and breathable.For anything going away for a season, folded and flat in something that breathes is safer than hanging, whatever the fabric.
