Why does my bath go cold so quickly?

Where the heat in a bath actually goes, why the material matters less than people think, and the changes that genuinely extend a soak.

Short answer

Most of the heat leaves through the open surface of the water, not through the bath. A cold room and a cold bath shell speed it up, and an uninsulated steel or thin acrylic bath draws heat away fast for the first few minutes. Warm the room, fill hotter and top up, and insulate the underside of the bath if you are ever in there with the panel off.

A bath of water is a large thermal mass losing heat in four directions at once: up off the open surface by evaporation and convection, sideways and down into the shell, out through the walls of the room, and down the overflow if you have filled it too high. Understanding which of those dominates tells you which fixes are worth doing.

Step by step

  1. Accept where most of the heat goes.The open water surface is the biggest single loss, and evaporation carries away far more than conduction into the bath does. This is why the same bath in a warm, closed, humid bathroom stays hot noticeably longer than in a cold one with the door open.
  2. Understand the first-few-minutes effect.A cold bath shell absorbs heat until it reaches water temperature. A thin steel shell in a cold room takes a real bite out of the water in the first two or three minutes. Cast iron takes a bigger bite but then holds it, which is why cast iron feels like it stays hot — it did the stealing early.
  3. Warm the room before you run it.This is the single most effective change and costs nothing but timing. Put the heating or the towel rail on for half an hour beforehand and shut the door and the window.
  4. Fill hotter and top up, rather than filling perfect.Running the bath slightly hotter than you want and letting it settle, then adding a short top-up of hot halfway through, keeps a soak comfortable far longer than trying to get the initial fill exactly right.
  5. Do not fill to the overflow.Water at the overflow drains away as you get in, and it takes its heat with it. It also means the top-up has nowhere to go.
  6. Insulate the underside if the panel is ever off.A bath insulation kit, or even loft insulation laid loosely under and around the shell without blocking access to the trap, cuts the conductive loss usefully. Do it while you are already in there for another job — it is not worth pulling a bathroom apart for.
  7. Check the hot water is actually arriving hot.A bath that never feels hot enough at the start is a different problem from one that cools. If the hot tap runs lukewarm, or runs hot then cools mid-fill, that is a cylinder or boiler question rather than a bath question.

Tips

  • A closed bathroom door does more for bath temperature than any bath material. Evaporation slows dramatically once the air above the water is saturated.
  • Bubble bath genuinely helps: the foam layer suppresses evaporation from the surface, which is the largest loss.
  • If a top-up of hot water runs cold after a few seconds, you are at the end of a cylinder's stored hot water, not looking at a bath problem.

Do bath insulation kits actually work?

They make a measurable difference to the early loss into the shell, and they also cut the drumming noise of a steel bath. They do nothing about the surface loss, which is larger, so treat them as worth doing while the panel is off rather than a reason to take it off.

Does a cast iron bath really stay hotter?

It holds the water temperature more steadily once everything has equalised, because the mass of the iron is at water temperature and is releasing heat back slowly. It also takes more heat out of the water at the start to get there.

Is it cheaper to fill hot and top up, or to run it slightly cool?

Filling to the temperature you want and topping up once is generally the more comfortable and no less efficient approach, because a bath filled too hot wastes the difference into the room while you wait.
