Should I buy an acrylic, steel or cast iron bath?

How the three common bath materials behave in real use — warmth, noise, weight, scratching and what happens underneath the floor — and which one suits which bathroom.

Short answer

Acrylic is warm, light, quiet and repairable, but it flexes and scratches. Steel is rigid and very hard-wearing but noisy and cold, and it chips to bare metal. Cast iron holds heat best and lasts a lifetime, but it is heavy enough to need the floor thought about. For most UK bathrooms a good thick acrylic bath on a proper cradle is the right answer.

The material argument is usually framed as quality, and that is the wrong frame. All three make good baths. What differs is how each one behaves once it is installed: how quickly the water cools, how much noise it makes filling, what happens when the surface gets damaged, and what the floor underneath has to carry. Get those four right for your bathroom and the choice makes itself.

Step by step

  1. Understand acrylic.A vacuum-formed sheet with a reinforcing backing, usually resin and fibreglass or a bonded board. It is warm to the touch, quiet to fill, and light enough for one person to carry. It relies entirely on its cradle and feet for rigidity, which is why a cheap thin one flexes. Thickness of the sheet and the amount of reinforcement are what separate a good acrylic bath from a bad one — not the price of the taps.
  2. Understand pressed steel.A stamped steel shell with vitreous enamel fused onto it. It is rigid, dimensionally stable, and the enamel is far harder than acrylic so it resists scratching and cleaning damage. It is also cold to the touch, noisy to fill, and a heavy knock chips the enamel through to bare steel, which then rusts from the chip outwards.
  3. Understand cast iron.The same vitreous enamel on a thick cast shell. It holds heat longer than either of the others, is entirely rigid, deadens noise, and will outlast the house. An empty one is typically a two-person lift and a full one with a person in it is a serious load on an upper floor.
  4. Check what your floor can take before you fall for cast iron.On a ground floor slab this is a non-question. On a suspended timber upper floor it is a real one, especially in an old house with undersized joists or a bath running parallel to the joists rather than across them. If you are seriously considering cast iron upstairs, get the floor looked at rather than guessing.
  5. Think about how you actually use the bath.If you soak for an hour, heat retention matters and cast iron or a well-insulated steel bath wins. If it is mostly a shower tray with taps, heat retention is irrelevant and you are choosing on rigidity and how it takes a scrub.
  6. Think about repair.Acrylic sands and polishes, so scratches come out and chips fill and blend well. Enamel chips can be filled but the repair is always visible at an angle, and a chip that reaches the steel has to be sealed or it rusts. Neither can be resurfaced properly in situ to a factory finish, whatever the resurfacing adverts say.
  7. Decide on the honest criteria.Upstairs, ordinary use, a normal budget: a thick acrylic bath, properly cradled. Heavy family use where the surface takes abuse: steel. A ground floor, a long soak, and a bathroom you are not going to touch again for thirty years: cast iron.

Common mistakes

  • Judging an acrylic bath by its price rather than its shell thickness and reinforcement — The flexing complaint people have about acrylic is almost entirely a thin-shell and no-cradle problem, and it is solvable at the point of buying.
  • Putting a cast iron bath into an upstairs bathroom without checking the floor — Water alone is a heavy load, and a cast iron shell adds a large fixed weight over a small footprint. It may well be fine. Guessing is not.
  • Using an abrasive cleaner on acrylic — It leaves a matt web of fine scratches that traps dirt permanently and cannot be cleaned out, only polished out.

Alternatives

  • Reinforced or twin-skinned acrylic: A heavier grade with a bonded board or extra resin layers under the shell. Costs more than basic acrylic, removes most of the flex complaint, and is the sensible default for a family bathroom.
  • Stone resin / composite: A cast mineral composite. Warm like acrylic, rigid like steel, holds heat well, and usually the most expensive of the lot. Heavy, though nothing like cast iron. Common in freestanding baths.
  • Steel bath with an insulating kit: A jacket or sprayed insulation applied to the underside. Removes most of the coldness and much of the drumming noise, and is far cheaper than moving up a material.

Questions people ask

Which bath keeps water hot the longest?

Cast iron, then stone resin, then an insulated steel bath, then acrylic, then bare steel. In practice the difference across an average bath is smaller than people expect, and insulating the underside of any bath narrows it further.

Is a steel bath really noisy?

Yes, on filling — an uninsulated steel bath drums. An underside insulation kit or a sprayed coating fixes most of it, and many mid-range steel baths now come with it factory-applied.

Will an acrylic bath discolour?

Good acrylic holds its colour. What people read as yellowing is usually a build-up of soap and body oils plus fine scratching that scatters light, and both respond to cleaning and polishing rather than replacement.
