Why does my washing machine cycle take so long?

Long cycles are usually the machine working correctly — but a cycle that keeps extending itself past its estimate is telling you something about the load, the water or the drain.

Short answer

Modern cycles are long by design, because time substitutes for heat and saves electricity. If yours is longer than the display first promised, the usual causes are an unbalanced load the machine keeps re-attempting, a slow fill from a partly closed tap or blocked inlet filter, or a slow drain. All three are checkable in ten minutes.

Two different questions hide inside this one. The first is why a normal modern cycle is two or three hours when a machine from twenty years ago took forty-five minutes, and the answer to that is design. The second is why the display said 2:10 and the machine finished at 3:40, and the answer to that is that the machine found something it did not expect. They need different responses, so work out which one you have.

Step by step

  1. First, check the cycle against the manual.If the programme table says that cycle is 3 hours 10, then it is 3 hours 10 and there is nothing to fix. Eco and cotton eco cycles in particular are long by design.
  2. Understand why long is efficient.Almost all the energy in a wash goes into heating water. Running cooler for longer cleans similarly for ordinary soil and uses substantially less electricity, so manufacturers lengthened cycles to hit energy label targets.
  3. Now separate that from a cycle that keeps extending.The countdown on a modern machine is an estimate that updates. If it keeps climbing, the machine is repeating something — usually a fill, a balance attempt or a drain.
  4. Watch the fill.Stand and listen at the start. Water should arrive steadily. A thin trickle means the tap is only part open, the fill hose is kinked behind the machine, or the gauze filter in the hose connection is blocked with grit.
  5. Watch the spin attempts.A machine that speeds up, slows, redistributes and tries again — repeatedly — is fighting an unbalanced load. Each attempt adds several minutes. Open it, pull the load apart and spread it around the drum.
  6. Check for a slow drain.If the machine sits for a long time between phases with water in the drum, clean the pump filter behind the flap at the bottom front, and check the waste hose and standpipe are clear.
  7. Check the load is not simply too big.Machines weigh the load and extend the cycle for a heavy one. A drum packed to the top with wet towels will legitimately take much longer than the display's first guess.
  8. Consider the incoming water temperature.In winter mains water can arrive several degrees colder, and the machine spends longer heating it. A cycle that is reliably longer in January than in July is normal.
  9. Look for an error code if it never finishes at all.A cycle that stalls indefinitely rather than merely running long is a fault, not a slow cycle. Note the code or the blink pattern and look it up against your model number.

Tips

  • The countdown resets after the fill on many machines because that is the point at which they know the load weight and water temperature. A jump upward at the ten-minute mark is normal behaviour.
  • If you need a wash finished by a particular time, use the programme table to pick a genuinely short cycle rather than trying to hurry a long one with a time-saver option.
  • A delay-start timer solves most complaints about long cycles: set it to finish shortly before you will be there to unload it.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a long cycle means a faulty machine — Cycle lengths roughly doubled across the industry to meet energy standards. Long is normal; extending past the estimate is what deserves investigation.
  • Adding a time-saver option to an eco cycle — The length is what was replacing the heat. Shortening it gives you a cool, short, poorly cleaning wash and saves little.

Time remaining keeps going up

Cause: Repeated balance attempts, or a slow fill — Fix: Redistribute the load and check the tap is fully open and the inlet gauze filter is clear.

Machine sits for long periods doing nothing

Cause: Slow drain, or a heating phase with cold incoming water — Fix: Clean the pump filter and check the waste hose and standpipe. If the drum drains normally, it is heating and there is nothing wrong.

Cycle runs on for hours and never ends

Cause: A fault the machine is retrying, rather than a long programme — Fix: Note any error code, switch off at the socket, and look the code up against the model number on the rating plate.
