Why is my washing machine not filling with water?

A machine that will not fill has a short list of causes and three of them are behind the machine rather than inside it — the tap, the hose and a gauze filter the size of a coin that almost nobody knows exists.

Short answer

Check the tap is fully open, the fill hose is not kinked behind the machine, and the small gauze filter in the hose connection at the machine end is not blocked with grit. Also confirm the door is properly latched, because a machine that cannot lock the door will not start filling at all. That covers most cases.

Filling is the first thing a machine does, so a fill fault stops everything and usually shows an error code within a few minutes. The good news is that the water path from the tap to the drum is mostly outside the machine and entirely accessible: a tap, a hose, a filter and a valve, in that order. Three of those four are owner-checkable.

Safety

Switch off at the socket and close the water tap before disconnecting any hose, and have a bowl and towels ready — the hose holds water at mains pressure. Do not remove the machine's casing to reach the inlet valve; that is engineer work. If water has reached a socket, an extension lead or the machine's electrics, do not touch the machine — turn the circuit off at the consumer unit first.

Step by step

  1. Check the door is properly shut and locked.Most machines will not begin filling until the interlock confirms the door is closed. A trapped sock in the seal or a latch that is not quite engaging looks exactly like a fill fault. Open and close it firmly and listen for the click.
  2. Check the tap is fully open.The washing machine valve behind the machine, usually with a blue or red lever. Quarter-turn valves are open when the lever lies along the pipe. A part-open tap gives a slow fill and a fill timeout rather than nothing at all.
  3. Check the household supply generally.Run the cold kitchen tap. If the whole house is off or at low pressure, the machine is a symptom rather than the problem.
  4. Pull the machine out and look at the fill hose.A kink, a tight bend against the wall, or a hose crushed by the machine being pushed back too far. This is common after a machine has been moved for cleaning.
  5. Switch off at the socket and close the tap.Both, before you undo anything. The hose is at mains pressure and will empty when you release it.
  6. Undo the hose at the machine end and find the gauze filter.Have a bowl ready. Inside the inlet connection on the machine sits a fine mesh disc about the size of a five pence piece. It traps grit and rust flakes from the mains and clogs slowly over years. It is the single most missed cause of a slow or failed fill.
  7. Clean the gauze and refit it the right way round.Rinse it under a tap and brush it with an old toothbrush. If it is scaled, soak it briefly in a descaler suitable for the material. It must go back in — running without it lets grit reach the inlet valve.
  8. Reconnect hand tight, plus a light nip.The seal is the rubber washer in the nut, not the thread, so no PTFE tape. Overtightening distorts the washer and causes the leak you will find next week.
  9. Open the tap and check for leaks before pushing the machine back.Watch both ends of the hose for a minute with a dry piece of paper under each. Then run a short cycle and watch it fill.
  10. Listen to what the machine does at the fill point.A steady buzz or hum from the top rear with no water arriving points at the inlet valve. Silence at the fill point points at the door interlock or the control side. Both are behind the casing.
  11. Note the error code and stop there.Fill errors are typically in the E1, F1, IE or 4E families depending on brand. With the model number from the rating plate, that is enough to hand an engineer a diagnosis rather than a symptom.

Tips

  • If the machine fills very slowly rather than not at all, the gauze filter is the first suspect, followed by a part-open tap. A complete failure to fill is more often the valve, the door interlock or the tap being fully closed.
  • In a hard water area the gauze scales as well as silting up. Worth checking every couple of years as routine rather than waiting for a fault.
  • A machine that fills and immediately drains — never reaching level — is not a fill fault at all. It is self-siphoning through the waste hose, which is an installation problem.
  • Some machines have two inlets, hot and cold, on older installations. Check both taps and both gauzes if yours does.

Common mistakes

  • Undoing the fill hose without closing the tap — It is mains pressure. You will empty a considerable amount of water into the back of a kitchen unit, near a socket, in a few seconds.
  • Throwing the gauze filter away because it looks like debris — It is a fitted part. Without it, grit reaches the inlet valve and jams it — which turns a five-minute clean into a component failure.
  • Using PTFE tape on the fill hose thread — The joint seals on a rubber washer, not the thread. Tape does nothing useful and can hold the washer off its seat.

If it doesn't work

No water at all, machine shows a fill error quickly

Cause: Tap closed, hose kinked, or the door interlock not confirming — Fix: Open the tap fully, straighten the hose, and reseat the door until it clicks. Then retry.

Very slow fill, cycle times out part way through

Cause: Blocked inlet gauze filter, or a part-open tap — Fix: Isolate power and water, undo the hose at the machine, clean the gauze, refit and retest.

Buzzing from the top rear, no water arriving

Cause: Inlet valve not opening — Fix: Behind the casing. Note the code and the model number and get an engineer; do not open the machine.

Fills and drains continuously without reaching level

Cause: Self-siphoning through the waste hose — Fix: Raise the waste hose into its high loop bracket and reduce how far it is pushed into the standpipe, leaving an air gap.

Where is the filter on a washing machine inlet hose?

Inside the hose connection at the machine end, and sometimes at the tap end as well. Close the tap, unscrew the hose with a bowl underneath, and you will see a fine mesh disc seated in the connection. It lifts out with pliers or a fingernail.

Why does my washing machine fill slowly?

Almost always a partly closed tap, a kinked hose or a silted-up inlet gauze filter. Low household mains pressure does it too. The machine will usually eventually time out and show a fill error rather than run a poor wash.
