The number on your screen when the phone rings is supplied by whoever placed the call, and it can be set to your bank's real number. That single fact undoes the instinctive check most people make. 159 was created to give the public a number they can remember and reach independently, in the way 999 works for emergencies.

1. Understand what it is.A short code operated under the Stop Scams UK scheme. You ring 159, choose your bank from a menu, and are connected to that bank's own fraud and customer line. Nobody can intercept it or redirect it.
2. Know when to use it.Any call claiming to be your bank. Any message about a payment, a refund, a blocked card or a suspicious transaction. Any moment where you have been asked to move money. Any doubt at all.
3. Hang up first, properly.End the call before dialling. If you are on a landline, wait several minutes for the line to clear, or use a mobile — the caller can otherwise hold the line open so your "new" call reaches them.
4. Check your bank and network take part.Most major UK banks and mobile networks participate but not every provider does. Stop Scams UK publishes the current list. If yours is not covered, use the number printed on the back of your card instead — that number is the fallback that always works.
5. Say what actually happened, in order.What you were told, what you were asked to do, what you did, and when. Amounts and times matter more than the story. Ask them to record it as a fraud report and to give you a reference.
6. Do not use it as a general enquiry line.It is not there for balance queries or a lost card in the ordinary sense. Use the number on your card for routine matters and keep 159 for the moments that matter.
7. Teach it to the people who need it.Written on a card by the phone, 159 works for someone who will never find a fraud number in an app under pressure. Add "never move money, never share a code" on the same card.

Tips

• 159 is charged at a normal national rate by most providers and is not free, though many bundles include it. It is not a premium number.
• Save the number on the back of your card into your phone as well, under the bank's name. Under pressure, having the right number already saved is worth more than remembering where to find it.
• 159 will never ring you. Any call claiming to come from 159 is fraudulent.

Common mistakes

• Ringing a number the caller gave you "to verify" — That is the mechanism, not the check. The number reaches the same operation, and they answer professionally.
• Treating the displayed caller ID as evidence — Number spoofing is trivial and widespread. A call showing your bank's genuine number tells you nothing whatever about who is calling.
• Assuming 159 stops fraud automatically — It only connects you. What protects you is telling the bank what happened, immediately, so they can act on the payment.
