What happens if an electric car runs out of charge?

The warnings the car gives before it stops, what turtle mode and reserve actually mean, why an EV usually cannot simply be towed, and how mobile charging works.

Short answer

It does not stop without warning. The car warns repeatedly, then restricts power — often called turtle or reduced power mode — and finally stops, usually with a small hidden reserve already used up. Once stopped you need recovery, because most EVs cannot be towed conventionally with the driving wheels on the road and need a flatbed. Some breakdown providers now carry mobile chargers that give enough range to reach a charge point, so it is worth asking whether yours does.

Running out of charge is less common than the anxiety around it suggests, and it is far less abrupt than running out of petrol. The car has been telling you for a long time by then. What makes it worse than a fuel breakdown is the recovery, not the stopping: you cannot walk to a garage with a can, and the car cannot simply be dragged to the nearest charger because most electric drivetrains are permanently connected to the wheels, so turning the wheels turns the motor. That is why a flatbed or a set of dollies is usually necessary, and why an EV recovery takes longer to arrange.

An electric car that has stopped is a stationary vehicle in traffic and the ordinary breakdown rules apply in full — get off the carriageway if you possibly can, hazard lights on, everyone out on the left and behind the barrier on a motorway, and call for assistance from there. Many EVs must not be towed with the driven wheels on the ground, so an inappropriate recovery can cause serious and expensive damage to the drivetrain.

Step by step

  1. Take the early warnings seriously.EVs warn well in advance — a low charge message, then a stronger one, then rerouting to the nearest charger, then a message that climate control is being reduced. Each of those is a decision point. The car is trying hard to prevent this.
  2. Reduce consumption immediately if you are short.Slow down, which is by far the biggest lever at speed. Turn the cabin heating down and use heated seats instead. Turn off anything unnecessary. Slowing from 70 to 55 makes a substantial difference to how far the remaining charge goes.
  3. Reroute to the nearest working charger, not the best one.Use the car's own planner if you can, because it knows the state of charge. A slow charger you can reach is worth more than a rapid one you cannot. A domestic three-pin socket at a friend's house will do at this point.
  4. Understand turtle or reduced power mode.Below a threshold the car limits power severely to eke out what is left. Acceleration becomes very slow and top speed drops. Get off fast roads immediately when this happens — a car that cannot accelerate is a hazard on a dual carriageway.
  5. Know that there is a reserve, and that it is small.Manufacturers hold back a buffer below zero to protect the cells from deep discharge, and the car uses part of it during the warnings. Do not plan around it: by the time you see zero, most of what was there is gone.

  7. Tell the recovery operator it is electric.This matters. Most EVs must be transported on a flatbed, or with the driven wheels lifted on dollies, because the motor is permanently geared to the wheels and towing spins it — which can damage the drivetrain and, on some cars, generate current with nowhere to go. Say so when you call so the right vehicle is dispatched.
  8. Ask whether your provider carries a mobile charger.The major UK providers have deployed mobile rapid charging units on some patrol vehicles, which can put in enough charge to reach a proper charge point. Coverage is patchy and it is not guaranteed, but it is worth asking when you take out cover as well as when you break down.
  9. Change the planning habit afterwards.Plan to arrive at chargers with fifteen to twenty per cent rather than five, and always identify a backup charger on the route. Charge point reliability is the real variable, not the car — a planned charger that is broken or occupied is how most people get into trouble.

Common mistakes

  • Planning to arrive at a charger with five per cent — It leaves no margin for a broken charger, a queue, a headwind or a diversion. Fifteen to twenty per cent removes almost all of the risk and costs a few minutes.
  • Letting a recovery operator tow it on its driven wheels — Most electric drivetrains have no neutral that disconnects the motor. Towing spins the motor and can cause expensive drivetrain damage. Flatbed or dollies, always, unless the handbook explicitly permits otherwise.

If it doesn't work

Turtle mode on a dual carriageway

Cause: Very low state of charge — Fix: Get off at the next exit or into a lay-by immediately. A vehicle unable to maintain speed on a fast road is a serious hazard, and you have very little range left to choose a better spot.

Reached a charger and it is broken

Cause: Charge point reliability — Fix: This is the most common cause of actually running out. Always have a second option identified before committing, and check a live status app before you rely on a lone charger.

Recovery arrived with a conventional tow truck

Cause: Not told it was electric — Fix: Do not let them tow it with the driven wheels turning. Insist on a flatbed or dollies. Say it is electric when you make the call so this does not arise.

Car will not respond at all after running flat

Cause: Often the 12V battery has also gone flat — Fix: The 12V system may need jumping before the car will do anything, including accept a charge. The catalogue's 12V guide covers it.

Reached a domestic socket but charging is very slow

Cause: A three-pin granny cable delivers a small fraction of a wallbox — Fix: Expected. It is measured in a few miles of range per hour, which is enough to reach a proper charger after a long stop but not enough to complete a journey.

Questions people ask

Can I carry a spare battery or a generator?

Not practically. The energy involved is far beyond anything portable at a useful weight, and a petrol generator would take many hours to add meaningful range. The realistic equivalent of a jerry can is a breakdown provider's mobile charging unit.

Does running an EV flat damage the battery?

Occasionally, no — the buffer exists to protect the cells and the car stops before real damage. Leaving it standing at zero for a long period is different and is genuinely harmful, so get it charged rather than letting it sit flat for weeks.

Can an electric car be push-started or coasted to a charger?

It can be pushed a short distance in the neutral position the handbook describes, if there is one, but there is no push-start equivalent — there is nothing to start. If the charger is not within a few metres, it is a recovery.
