What can I grow in a spot that is wet in winter and dry in summer?

Short answer

This is heavy soil doing what heavy soil does: waterlogged and airless from autumn to spring, then baked and cracked in summer. Very few plants tolerate both extremes, and the ones that do have deep, coarse, fleshy root systems rather than fine ones. Narrow the swing by adding organic matter every year and mulching, and choose plants adapted to floodplain and seasonally wet ground rather than either bog plants or drought plants.

People often approach this as two separate problems and pick plants for one of them, which fails in the other season. The characteristic that matters is tolerance of the swing itself, and that is a much shorter list than either wet-tolerant or drought-tolerant plants.

  1. Confirm what you actually have.Dig a hole a spade deep in winter and see whether water stands in it. Look at the same ground in August for cracking and a hard set surface. Both together confirms a heavy soil with a seasonal water table rather than either a bog or a dry bank.
  2. Rule out the wrong answers.Bog and marginal plants need moisture all year and die in the summer bake. Mediterranean and silver-leaved plants love the summer and rot in the winter. Neither group is the answer, however tempting each is in its own season.
  3. Look at what tolerates the swing.Plants from floodplains, water meadows and seasonally wet grassland are adapted to exactly this. Their roots go deep enough to find summer moisture and they tolerate winter saturation of the upper layers.
  4. Favour deep, coarse root systems.Fleshy or deeply questing roots reach below the zone that bakes and tolerate periods without air better than fine fibrous ones. This characteristic matters more than any label on a plant.
  5. Add organic matter every single year.It is the one treatment that helps both problems at once — it opens heavy soil so winter water can move through, and it holds moisture in summer. This is slow and cumulative and there is no substitute for it.
  6. Mulch thickly after winter rain, before the summer.A mulch applied in spring onto moist soil dramatically reduces the summer bake and slows the cracking. The timing is everything: mulch onto ground that is already wet.
  7. Consider raising the level for the plants that need it.A low mound or a raised bed lifts a plant's crown out of the winter water while leaving its roots able to reach down for summer moisture. It is often the difference between a plant surviving and not.
  8. Never work the soil when it is wet.Walking on or digging heavy soil in winter destroys its structure and makes both extremes worse. Work it only when it crumbles rather than smears, and use boards to spread your weight if you must cross it.

Tips

  • Willow, dogwood, alder, guelder rose, meadowsweet, purple loosestrife, many irises, astrantia, persicaria, rudbeckia and several grasses handle seasonal wet far better than most garden plants.
  • Autumn planting is the wrong choice here. Plant in spring so the plant has a full season to root deeply before it meets a saturated winter.
  • Deep-rooted plants take a few years to reach their proper capability. A plant that struggles in its first summer may be entirely comfortable in its fourth.
  • Look at what grows in the local landscape on similar ground. Field margins, ditches and rough grazing on the same geology show you what works before you buy anything.
  • If the ground is genuinely waterlogged for months, consider whether a bog garden or a pond in the lowest part is a better use of it than fighting the conditions.

Common mistakes

  • Improving the drainage of one planting hole — In a heavy soil with a seasonal water table, a well-drained hole becomes a sump that fills from the surrounding ground and holds water longer than the clay would have. Improve areas, not holes.
  • Choosing drought-tolerant plants because summer is when the plants visibly suffer — Winter is what kills them. Almost all the classic drought-tolerant garden plants require free drainage in winter, which is exactly what this site does not have.
  • Adding sand to clay — Small quantities of sand in clay make something closer to concrete. Organic matter is what opens heavy soil; grit works only in large quantities and over a limited area.

Would drainage solve it?

Land drainage can, if there is somewhere lower for the water to go. Without an outfall, a drainage system simply moves water to a different part of the same problem. Improving structure and choosing plants is more reliable for most gardens.

Why does clay crack so dramatically in summer?

Clay particles hold water between their layers and shrink as they lose it. The shrinkage is what opens the cracks, and it is also what damages roots as the soil moves around them.

Is a raised bed a complete answer?

For the plants in it, largely yes, provided the bed drains into ground that can take the water. It sidesteps the winter wet entirely and lets you control the soil, though a raised bed also dries faster in summer and needs watering.
