What does a wet summer do to a garden and what should I change?

Short answer

Prioritise airflow and drainage over everything else: thin crowded growth, stake and space plants, get fruit off the ground, and stop watering. Expect slug pressure and disease to be the dominant problems rather than growth failure. Feed more often but more lightly, because nutrients leach out of wet soil. Stay off the beds — walking on saturated soil does damage that lasts for years.

British gardening advice is written mostly for dry summers, which is odd given how often we get the other kind. A wet summer is not simply a dry one with less watering: it produces a different set of problems, and several of the habits that help in a dry year make a wet one worse.

Step by step

  1. Stop watering and check before assuming.The obvious one, and yet containers under a dense canopy, plants under cover and anything in a rain shadow can still be dry in a wet summer. Check rather than assuming either way.
  2. Open everything up.Thin congested growth, remove lower leaves on tomatoes and courgettes, take out crossing branches, and widen spacing where you can. Airflow is the single most effective intervention against a wet-summer disease load.
  3. Get soft fruit and vegetables off the soil.Straw or matting under strawberries, supports under squash and melons, and staking anything that would otherwise flop. Contact with wet soil is where rot starts.
  4. Keep off the beds.Walking on saturated soil compacts it and destroys the structure you have spent years building. Use boards, work from paths, and postpone anything that requires standing on a bed.
  5. Adjust the feeding.Little and often rather than occasional and heavy, because rain is continuously washing nutrients down past the roots. Containers especially need more frequent feeding in a wet summer than in a dry one.
  6. Deal with slugs where it matters.Accept you will not control them across the garden. Protect the specific plants you care about, remove their daytime shelter nearby, and go out with a torch after dark, which is worth more than any product.
  7. Harvest promptly.Fruit and vegetables left on the plant in wet weather rot rather than ripening further. Picking regularly also keeps plants cropping and reduces the amount of rotting material sitting in the plant.
  8. Improve drainage for next year.A wet summer shows you exactly where your garden holds water. Note it while you can see it, and use the autumn and winter to add organic matter, raise beds or fix the compaction that caused it.

  • A wet summer is the best time to observe your garden's drainage honestly. Photograph where water stands and use it as the plan for winter work.
  • Potato and tomato blight need warm humid conditions for a sustained period. Blight warnings are published during the season, and early-maturing potato varieties lifted before the risk peaks avoid the problem entirely.
  • Do not compost material affected by blight or by persistent fungal disease in an ordinary garden heap, which rarely gets hot enough to kill spores.
  • Grass grows fast and gets cut late in a wet summer. Raise the mower height rather than scalping it, and never mow saturated ground — it compacts and rips.
  • The upside is real: hedges, trees, shrubs and lawns put on excellent growth in a wet summer, new plantings establish easily, and nothing needs watering.

Blight, mildew, rusts and leaf spots spreading rapidly

Cause: Persistent leaf wetness and high humidity, which is what almost every fungal pathogen needs to germinate and spread — Fix: Increase airflow — thin crowded growth, remove lower leaves on tomatoes and squash, widen spacing at planting next year. Never water overhead. Remove affected material promptly rather than composting it in place.

Slugs and snails causing far more damage than usual

Cause: Damp conditions let them feed for far longer each day and across more of the garden — Fix: Concentrate control on the plants that actually matter rather than the whole garden, remove daytime shelter near vulnerable plants, and go out after dark with a torch, which remains the most effective method there is.

Fruit splitting on the tree or plant

Cause: A dry period followed by heavy rain — the roots take up water faster than the skin can expand — Fix: Even out soil moisture with mulch so the swings are smaller. Pick fruit slightly earlier when heavy rain is forecast after a dry spell.

Poor fruit set and few pollinators about

Cause: Bees and other pollinators do not fly in persistent rain, so flowers open and close unvisited — Fix: Not much can be done at the time. Hand-pollinate high-value crops under cover, and plan for a longer succession of flowering next year so some of it coincides with flying weather.

Plants pale and unthrifty despite plenty of water

Cause: Nitrogen and other soluble nutrients leached out of the root zone by continuous rain, particularly on light soils and in containers — Fix: Feed more often at a lower rate rather than occasionally at a high one. Containers in a wet summer need feeding considerably more than people expect.

Soil that has become compacted, sour and slow

Cause: Being walked on or worked while saturated, which destroys structure and drives out air — Fix: Stay off it. Use boards to spread weight where you must cross, and repair the damage with organic matter over subsequent seasons — there is no quick fix.

Should I still mulch in a wet summer?

Yes — mulch evens out soil moisture, which reduces fruit splitting, and it stops rain splashing soil-borne spores onto lower foliage. Keep it off stems and crowns as always.

Why is fruit tasteless in a wet summer?

Sugars concentrate with sunshine and warmth, and dilute with water uptake. A wet, dull summer produces larger, wetter, blander fruit, which is a genuine effect rather than an impression.

Is there any point spraying preventively?

For most garden situations, cultural control — spacing, airflow, removing infected material, watering at the base and choosing resistant varieties — does more than anything available to a home gardener, and it does not have to be timed correctly to work.
