Can weedkiller in manure ruin my garden?
Aminopyralid and clopyralid residues pass through animals and survive composting — how they reach a garden, what the damage looks like, and why nothing about the manure warns you.

Short answer
Herbicides used to kill docks and thistles in pasture pass through horses and cattle unchanged, survive a year of rotting, and distort tomatoes, potatoes, beans, peas and dahlias at concentrations far too low to detect any other way. Nothing about the manure looks, smells or feels wrong. The only reliable protection is to ask about the source and to run a bean test before you spread.
This is the most damaging thing that can arrive in a garden inside a material a gardener chose deliberately and carefully. Aminopyralid and clopyralid are hormone-type herbicides used on grassland to control docks, thistles, nettles and buttercups without killing the grass. They are extraordinarily persistent, they pass through an animal essentially intact, and they survive being stacked and rotted for a year or more. A load of beautiful, well-rotted, sweet-smelling manure can wipe out a season of vegetables.

Step by step
- Understand the route.A pasture or hay field is sprayed. The grass is cut for hay, haylage or silage carrying the residue in the plant tissue. It is fed to horses or cattle. The chemical passes through the animal and comes out in the dung and urine. The bedding and dung are stacked and rot down. The gardener collects it, spreads it, and plants.
- Recognise the damage.Cupped leaves curling downward at the edges. New leaves narrowed and fern-like, especially on tomatoes. Growing points twisted or fused. Stems that spiral. Stunting with dark, hard, brittle foliage. Potatoes showing fan-shaped distorted leaves. It appears within two to four weeks of growth in the affected soil.
- Know which plants show it.Worst hit: tomatoes, potatoes, peas, beans, lettuce, carrots, spinach, dahlias, roses. Largely unaffected: sweetcorn, onions, leeks, garlic, brassicas and all grasses — which is why the lawn beside the affected bed looks perfect and adds to the confusion.
- Rule out the imitators before concluding.Herbicide drift from a neighbour's lawn treatment produces very similar symptoms but affects only the plants nearest the source. Virus produces mottling and mosaic patterns rather than pure distortion. Aphid damage at the growing point distorts new leaves but you can see the aphids. Contamination affects everything susceptible across the whole treated area evenly, which is the distinguishing pattern.
- Know which materials carry the risk.Horse manure from a livery yard where the hay is bought in, and stable bedding, are the classic sources — the yard usually has no idea where the hay was grown. Farmyard manure, hay and straw used as mulch, and green-waste compost that has taken in contaminated grass clippings can all carry it. Poultry manure from housed birds fed on grain is much lower risk.
- Understand why composting does not solve it.These compounds break down through soil microbial action, slowly, and largely only once they are in contact with soil. A heap does not destroy them reliably, and a hot heap does not either. Well-rotted is not the same as safe, and this is the point on which most people get caught.
- Ask the right questions before you accept any load.Where does your hay or straw come from? Do you know whether the field it came from was sprayed? Have you had any complaints from gardeners? A yard that does not know is not being evasive — most genuinely do not know, and that answer is itself the risk assessment.
- Test rather than trust, on anything going near vegetables.A pot test with bean seedlings takes three weeks and detects residues at concentrations no other garden test will find. It is the only thing that reliably tells you before rather than after.
Tips
- Green-waste compost from a certified producer working to a recognised quality protocol is generally low risk, because the input specification excludes treated material and the process is audited. Uncertified green waste is a different proposition.
- The residue persists in soil for one to three years, breaking down faster in warm, moist, biologically active soil than in cold or waterlogged ground. Nothing accelerates it meaningfully except time and soil life.
- It is not a food safety issue at the concentrations involved — the affected crop is usually unsaleable and unappetising rather than dangerous — but distorted produce from clearly affected plants is not worth eating and the plants rarely crop anyway.
- If you are supplied contaminated manure by a commercial seller, tell them. Most of the market improvement over the last decade has come from gardeners reporting it back up the chain.
- Keep a note of where every load came from, and the date. If a problem appears two years later you will want to know which corner of the plot got which delivery.
Common mistakes
- Assuming a year of rotting makes manure safe — It makes it safe for nitrogen scorch and for weed seed. It does very little to aminopyralid. Time in a heap and time in living soil are not equivalent.
- Judging a load by how it looks and smells — There is no visual, textural or olfactory indicator at all. Contaminated manure is indistinguishable from clean manure by every sense you have.
- Blaming the compost heap when symptoms appear — The heap is often the messenger rather than the source — contaminated straw, hay or clippings put onto a home heap carry the residue straight into the finished compost.

Are these herbicides legal?
Products containing aminopyralid and clopyralid are approved for agricultural and professional use with strict conditions on where the treated material may go, including requirements to inform anyone taking the hay or manure. The problem is that the information rarely survives more than one link in the chain from field to garden.
Is the affected produce dangerous to eat?
The concentrations involved are far below anything of toxicological concern for people, and the damage is to the plant's growth regulation rather than to its safety. In practice affected crops are so distorted and unproductive that the question rarely arises.
Does it affect fruit trees and shrubs?
Woody plants are much less sensitive than annual vegetables, and mature trees and shrubs generally shrug off levels that destroy a tomato crop. Roses and young woody plants can show distortion at higher concentrations.
Which manure is safest?
Poultry manure from housed birds on a grain diet, and manure from animals you know were fed only on hay from unsprayed ground. Otherwise, test rather than guess.
