How do I use a hot glue gun properly, and why does hot glue let go?
A fast, forgiving adhesive with three specific weaknesses — heat, peel and time — and the technique that works around all three.

Short answer
Let the gun reach full temperature, warm the workpiece if it is cold or heavy, apply and press together within a few seconds, and hold until it goes from clear to cloudy. Hot melt fails when the substrate was cold, when the joint gets warm, and when it is loaded in peel — it is a temporary and craft adhesive rather than a structural one.
Hot melt is a thermoplastic: it is solid, it is melted, it wets the surface, and it becomes solid again as it cools. Everything good and bad about it follows from that. It sets in seconds, it needs no clamping, it fills gaps happily, it can be softened and removed — and it will soften again in a warm car, a loft in summer or next to a light fitting.

Step by step
- Choose the right gun temperature for the material.High-temperature guns give a stronger bond and flow better. Low-temperature guns are for polystyrene, thin plastics, fabric, foam and anything a child is using — high heat melts or distorts those. Dual-temperature guns exist and are worth having.
- Let it reach full temperature before you start.Usually three to five minutes. Glue extruded before the gun is up to heat is too cool to wet the surface, and it forms a bond that looks fine and peels off in one piece — this is the single most common cause of hot glue failing.
- Clean the surfaces.Hot melt is unforgiving about grease and dust because it has only seconds to wet the surface before it sets. A wipe with alcohol on non-porous materials makes a real difference.
- Warm cold or heavy parts before gluing.A cold substrate chills the glue on contact so it skins before it can flow into the surface. On metal, glass, stone or anything straight out of a cold garage, warm the part with a hairdryer first. This is the difference between a bond and a blob.
- Apply and assemble within a few seconds.Open time is short — often under ten seconds and less on a cold day. Have the parts to hand and go straight from the bead to the assembly.
- Press firmly and hold until it turns cloudy.Hot melt is clear when molten and goes opaque as it solidifies. That colour change is the signal that it has set. Holding it for those few seconds is all the clamping it needs.
- Use it in shear, not in peel.Hot melt is reasonably strong pulled along the joint and very weak lifted at an edge. Design the joint or the fillet so any load pushes along the bond rather than peeling it, and run a fillet up the side of a joint to spread the load.
- Remove it with heat or cold rather than force.A hairdryer or heat gun softens it enough to peel; a freezer or an ice pack makes it brittle enough to chip off cleanly. Isopropyl alcohol run into the bond line helps release it from non-porous surfaces.
Tips
- Glue sticks are not all the same. Specialist sticks exist for wood, fabric, low temperature, high strength and even a flexible grade — the general-purpose clear stick is the weakest of the range.
- The strings are unavoidable and harmless. Let them cool and rub them off, or knock them down with a quick pass of a hairdryer.
- Never use hot melt where it will get warm: near a light, in a car, in a loft, behind a radiator or in a conservatory. It softens well below the temperature those reach in summer.
- It is excellent as a temporary fixture — holding a part while a proper adhesive cures, tacking a template in place, holding a small item for machining — and easy to remove afterwards.
- Squeeze the trigger gently and pull the gun away with a twist to break the bead cleanly rather than dragging a string across the work.
Common mistakes
- Gluing onto a cold surface — The glue freezes before it wets the substrate. The bond has no adhesion at all and lifts off as a rubbery skin.
- Using it before the gun is hot — Same result: glue at too low a temperature does not flow into the surface. Give it the full warm-up.
- Treating it as a permanent structural adhesive — It creeps under sustained load and softens in heat. Anything that must hold for years or hold weight needs a curing adhesive.
- Trying to pull hot glue off a burn — It takes skin with it. Cool it under running water first and let it come away on its own.
If it doesn't work
The glue peels off in one rubbery piece
Cause: Cold substrate or gun not up to temperature — Fix: Warm the part and the gun, clean the surface, and re-apply. On a heavy or metal part, a hairdryer on the surface first is the whole fix.
The joint let go in a warm room or a hot car
Cause: The thermoplastic softened — Fix: Hot melt is the wrong adhesive for that location. Use an epoxy, a hybrid polymer or a mechanical fixing instead.
The gun drips constantly
Cause: Normal residual pressure, worsened by an overheated gun or a partly inserted stick — Fix: Stand it on its stand over a scrap of card, push the stick fully in, and switch it off between bursts of work.
Questions people ask
How strong is hot glue?
Strong enough for craft, model and temporary work, and weak by the standards of curing adhesives. Its practical strength is limited by creep under sustained load and by softening with heat, not usually by the initial bond.
Is hot glue waterproof?
It is not absorbed by water and does not dissolve, so it survives damp reasonably. It is not a sealant and it should not be relied on to keep water out of anything that matters.
Can I use a glue gun on fabric?
Yes, with a low-temperature gun and preferably a fabric-specific stick. It stiffens the fabric where it goes and it does not survive washing, so it is a craft answer rather than a repair.
Why does my hot glue not stick to plastic?
Polypropylene and polyethylene resist almost every adhesive including hot melt, and smooth plastics chill the glue quickly. Abrade the surface, warm it, and accept that some plastics simply will not hold.
