Why does my tyre pressure light come on when it gets cold?

Air contracts as it cools, so a tyre correctly set in September reads low in November. How to tell the seasonal drop from a slow puncture, and why topping up warm tyres sets them wrong.

Short answer

Tyre pressure falls by roughly 1 psi for every 10°C drop in temperature, so the first properly cold morning of autumn sets off warning lights on cars that were perfectly fine a fortnight earlier. Check all four cold with a gauge and reset them to the car's figures. If one tyre is much lower than the other three, that is a puncture, not the weather.

This is the most common dashboard surprise of the autumn, and it is physics rather than a fault. The air inside a tyre takes up less space when it is colder, so the pressure falls. The tyre pressure monitoring system does not know why the pressure has dropped — it only knows it is below the threshold, which on most cars is somewhere around 10 to 15 per cent under the set figure. A car set correctly on a mild 18°C afternoon in September can easily be below that threshold on a 2°C morning in November without a single molecule of air having escaped.

Safety

A tyre pressure warning can also mean a genuine puncture, and an underinflated tyre at speed can overheat and fail. Do not assume it is only the weather without checking all four pressures with a gauge. If the car feels unusual to steer, or one tyre is visibly low, reduce speed and stop somewhere safe.
Why the tyre pressure light comes on when the weather turns

Step by step

  1. Check all four pressures cold, with a gauge.Cold means the car has stood for a couple of hours, or driven less than about a mile. Driving heats the tyres and raises the reading, which is why topping up at a garage after a long drive leaves you underinflated once they cool.
  2. Use the car's figures, not the tyre's.The correct pressures are on a sticker in the driver's door shut, inside the fuel filler flap, or in the handbook. The number moulded into the tyre sidewall is that tyre's maximum, not your car's target, and using it gives a hard ride and a worn tyre centre.
  3. Compare the four readings against each other.This is the test that separates weather from puncture. Cold weather drops all four by a similar amount. A puncture drops one. If three read 30 and one reads 24, that one has a problem.
  4. Use the pressure for how the car is loaded.Most cars list a normal figure and a laden figure for a full load or towing. Autumn is also when people start carrying more, so check which column you are in.
  5. Reset the system after inflating.Many cars need the monitoring system reset through a menu or a button once the pressures are corrected, otherwise the light stays on. The handbook gives the procedure and it usually takes seconds.
  6. Watch what happens over the next week.If the light stays off, it was temperature. If it returns within days on the same wheel, you have a slow puncture — often a nail that seals itself well enough to be missed, or a corroded alloy rim leaking at the bead.
  7. Check the spare, if you have one.Spares lose pressure slowly for years and are almost never checked. A space-saver in particular usually needs a much higher pressure than the road tyres, printed on the wheel.

Common mistakes

  • Inflating hot tyres to the cold figure — Tyres can read several psi higher when hot. Setting them to the target while hot leaves them meaningfully underinflated once they cool, which is the opposite of what you wanted.
  • Overinflating to stop the light coming back — It reduces grip and braking performance by shrinking the contact patch, wears the middle of the tread, and makes the ride worse. The gain is a light staying off.

If it doesn't work

Light comes on every cold morning and goes off later in the day

Cause: Pressures set slightly low, so the tyres cross the threshold when cold and recover as they warm — Fix: Set them properly cold. Chasing it by inflating warm tyres makes it worse each time.

One tyre repeatedly low

Cause: Slow puncture or a leaking valve or rim seal — Fix: Have it looked at rather than topping it up weekly. A tyre place will find it in minutes in a water bath, and a repairable puncture in the central tread area is far cheaper than a new tyre.

Light on but all pressures are correct

Cause: A failed sensor, or a sensor battery at end of life — Fix: The sensors have batteries that last several years and cannot be replaced separately on most systems. A tyre fitter can read which sensor is not reporting.

Light came on right after new tyres or a wheel swap

Cause: Sensors not relearned, or damaged during fitting — Fix: Go back to the fitter. Relearning the sensor positions is part of the job.

No sensors at all, but the car warns anyway

Cause: An indirect system that infers pressure from wheel speeds via the ABS — Fix: These need resetting after any pressure change, and they are less precise. Check pressures manually every couple of weeks regardless.

Questions people ask

How much does pressure really change with temperature?

Roughly 1 psi for every 10°C, which sounds trivial until you notice that a September-to-November swing in Britain can easily be 15°C or more. That is enough to take a tyre from correct to warning.

Should I add extra pressure for winter?

No. Set the pressures the manufacturer specifies, checked cold. What changes in winter is how often you should check, not what the target is.

Is it safe to drive with the light on?

Only as far as somewhere you can check it. Until you have measured all four, you do not know whether it is a 3 psi seasonal drop or a tyre going flat, and those need very different responses.
