Short answer

Restart it, then check the storage — a tablet above about 90% full slows dramatically. If it is more than five or six years old and no longer receiving updates, the honest answer is usually that it has reached the end.

Tablets slow down for reasons that are mostly fixable and one that is not. Storage pressure, background apps and accumulated cache all respond to attention; a device whose operating system has outgrown its hardware does not.

Step by step

  1. Restart it properly.Fully off and on, not just locked. Tablets often go months without a restart, and memory pressure builds up.
  2. Check the storage.Above roughly 90% full, performance degrades sharply. This is the most common cause and the most fixable.
  3. Close and review background apps.Check which apps are permitted to refresh in the background and turn it off for the ones that do not need it.
  4. Uninstall what you do not use.Unused apps update themselves, run background services and consume storage. Removing them helps on all three counts.
  5. Clear browser cache and app caches.Browsers in particular accumulate a great deal. Safe to clear, though it will log you out of some sites.
  6. Check for pending updates.Updates fix performance bugs. But on very old hardware a new version can also be the thing that slowed it — worth knowing which happened.
  7. Turn off animations and visual effects.Reduce motion or transition settings make an older tablet feel noticeably more responsive.
  8. Consider a factory reset as a last resort.Back everything up first. A clean install genuinely restores performance on a device clogged by years of accumulated software.

Tips

  • Check when the manufacturer stopped supporting your model. Once security updates end, keeping it for browsing and banking is not sensible regardless of speed.
  • An old tablet still works well as a dedicated device — a recipe screen, a photo frame, a music controller — even when it is too slow for general use.
  • Restart it once a week. It is the single easiest habit for keeping any device responsive.

Questions people ask

Why did my tablet slow down after an update?

New system versions are built for newer hardware and ask more of the processor and memory. On an older device this is often permanent.

Will a factory reset make my tablet faster?

Usually yes — it removes years of accumulated apps and cached data. Back everything up first, and expect to spend time setting it up again.
