Short answer

Keep it between roughly 20% and 80% charge where convenient, keep it out of heat, put a case and screen protector on it, and keep storage below about 90% full. Heat damages batteries faster than charge cycles do.

Phones are usually replaced for one of four reasons: the battery, a broken screen, running out of storage, or the end of security updates. Only the last is genuinely outside your control, and the other three respond well to fairly small habits.

Step by step

  1. Avoid heat above everything else.A hot car, a sunny windowsill or charging under a pillow degrades a battery faster than any charging pattern. Heat is the main enemy.
  2. Keep the charge in the middle of the range.Roughly 20-80% is easiest on lithium batteries. Most phones now have an optimised charging setting that does this automatically overnight — turn it on.
  3. Fit a case and a screen protector.A cracked screen ends more phones than battery wear does, and the protection costs a fraction of the repair.
  4. Keep meaningful free storage.A phone that is completely full slows down and cannot install updates, including security ones. Aim to keep around 10% free.
  5. Install updates, especially security ones. They are what keeps the device safe to use for banking and email, and they are the eventual hard limit on its life.
  6. Clear out apps you do not use. They consume storage, run in the background and drain the battery. Reviewing them twice a year is enough.
  7. Keep the charging port clean.Pocket lint compacts in the port and causes intermittent charging that looks exactly like a failing battery. A wooden toothpick, gently, with the phone off.

Tips

  • Check how long your model receives security updates before buying. It varies enormously between manufacturers and it is the real expiry date.
  • Wireless charging generates more heat than cable charging. Convenient, but not the kindest option for long-term battery health.
  • Back the phone up regularly. It does not extend the phone's life, but it removes most of the cost of losing it.

Common mistakes

  • Letting it run flat regularly — Deep discharges are harder on lithium batteries than partial ones. There is no need to fully cycle a modern phone.
  • Leaving it charging in a hot place — Heat plus a full charge is the worst combination for battery chemistry, and it is exactly what charging under a pillow produces.

Questions people ask

Should I let my phone go flat before charging?

No. That advice belongs to a much older battery chemistry. Partial top-ups are better for a lithium battery than full cycles.

How long should a phone last?

Five years or more is realistic with a battery replacement along the way. The practical limit is usually when security updates stop.
