  6. Do not just open a window and hope.Ventilation helps with vapour and it does not remove fine dust, which stays suspended for hours. A window with an extractor blowing outwards is better than a window alone.
  7. Turn the heating off in the room.Warm air currents distribute dust round the house and central heating pulls it into other rooms. Also stops adhesive and filler skinning too fast.
  8. Sort the light out before starting.A work light on a stand, not the ceiling light behind you. Raking light across a surface shows every defect, and it is the difference between finding a flaw now and after painting.
  9. Get power in safely.An RCD, a fully uncoiled extension reel, and the lead routed where nobody walks. A coiled reel under load overheats, and a lead across a doorway is the classic trip.
  10. Set up a cutting station outside the room.Trestles in a garage, a garden or a hallway. Cutting where the dust does not matter is worth the walk, and it keeps the work area clear.
