How wide and deep should a sealant joint be?

A sealant joint has to be wide enough to stretch and shallow enough not to be over-restrained, and it must bond to two faces rather than three. Getting the shape wrong is why beads split.

Short answer

A sealant bead works by stretching. It needs to be roughly twice as wide as it is deep, and it must stick to the two faces either side of the gap but not to the back of it. A bead stuck on three sides cannot stretch and tears itself apart. A backer rod or bond-breaker tape prevents that.

This is the piece of knowledge that turns sealant from a consumable into something that lasts. Most domestic beads fail early because they were squeezed into a gap of whatever size happened to be there, filled to whatever depth the gun delivered, and bonded to everything they touched. Sealant is an engineered material with a shape it needs to be.

Why a sealant joint must bond to two faces and not three

Step by step

  1. Understand what the bead is doing.It is a flexible bridge between two surfaces that move relative to each other. Every bit of movement is taken up by the bead stretching and compressing. Anything that stops it stretching transfers the strain to the bond instead.
  2. Aim for a width-to-depth ratio of roughly two to one.A joint about twice as wide as it is deep gives an hourglass-shaped bead that can stretch across its middle. A deep narrow bead is stiff and tears. This is a general rule; a specific product's data sheet overrides it.
  3. Avoid bonding to the back of the joint.This is three-sided adhesion, and it is the single most common cause of a bead splitting down the middle. Stuck front, back and both sides, the sealant has nowhere to go when the joint opens.
  4. Use a backer rod in a deep joint.A closed-cell foam rod pushed into the gap sets the depth and gives a surface the sealant will not bond to. It also saves a great deal of sealant in a deep gap.
  5. Use bond-breaker tape where the joint is too shallow for a rod.A strip of tape along the back of the joint does the same job in a shallow gap: it stops the sealant sticking to the third face.
  6. Do not seal a gap that is too wide for sealant.Beyond a certain width, a bead sags and will not hold. Large gaps want filling with an appropriate material first, leaving a properly-sized joint to be sealed.
  7. Do not seal a gap that is too narrow either.A hairline joint cannot hold enough sealant to stretch. It needs opening out, or a different approach entirely.

Tips

  • Backer rod should be pushed in, not stretched. Stretching it narrows it and it creeps back out later.
  • Where a bath meets tiles, the movement is mostly the bath deflecting when filled. That is real movement and is why the joint needs to be able to stretch.

Common mistakes

  • Filling a deep gap entirely with sealant. — It gives three-sided adhesion, wastes a great deal of sealant, and produces a stiff bead that splits.
  • Assuming a bigger bead is a stronger bead. — Beyond the right proportion it becomes stiffer, not stronger, and concentrates strain at the bond line.

What is a backer rod made of?

Usually closed-cell polyethylene foam in a range of diameters. Choose one slightly larger than the gap so it stays put under light compression.

Does this matter for a small bathroom bead?

Less than for a large external joint, but the three-sided adhesion principle still applies. It is why a bead pressed hard into the very back of a corner splits sooner than one that spans the gap.
