Should I seal my concrete floor, and with what?
Sealing reduces dusting and stops the surface absorbing water and salt. Whether it is the right answer depends on what you want the floor to do and whether it is dry enough to accept anything.

Short answer
Do the moisture test first — nothing bonds to a slab with moisture moving through it. Then choose by purpose: a penetrating sealer for dust and absorption while keeping the concrete looking like concrete, or a coating where you want colour, chemical resistance and easy cleaning.
Sealing and painting get talked about as if they were the same decision. They are not. A sealer soaks in and changes how the concrete behaves; a coating sits on top and changes what the floor is. - Test for moisture before deciding anything.Tape plastic down for a couple of days and look underneath. Moisture coming through the slab rules out most coatings and some sealers, and no amount of preparation compensates for it.
- Decide what problem you are actually solving.Dust on everything, water and salt soaking in, oil staining, or appearance. Each points at a different product, and some of them are better solved by a mat or a drip tray.
- Consider a penetrating sealer for dusting and absorption.These soak in and react within the surface rather than forming a film. They cannot peel, because there is no layer to peel, which makes them a low-risk choice on an older slab.
- Consider a film-forming coating where you want more.Colour, easy cleaning, chemical resistance and a wipeable surface come from a coating. They are also the products that lift when the preparation or the moisture is wrong.
- Check what is already on the floor.An old coating, a curing compound left from construction or an oil-soaked area will all prevent a new product bonding. That is a preparation question and it decides much of the work.

- Match the product to the temperature you can achieve.An unheated garage in winter is below the minimum application temperature for many products. Applying below it gives a soft or uncured finish that never recovers.
- Accept that a sealed floor still needs looking after.Sealers wear, particularly where the tyres sit and turn. Reapplication is part of the deal rather than a sign of failure.
Alternatives
- Interlocking tiles or a mat: No adhesion risk at all, tolerant of a damp slab, removable, and immediate. Often the sensible answer where a slab is not dry enough to coat.
- Do nothing but keep it swept: For a slab that is sound and not dusting badly, sealing may not be worth the work. Dusting specifically has its own guide.

Will sealing stop a damp floor?
No, and it often makes things worse by trapping moisture under a film, which then blisters. Damp is a membrane question, not a coating one.
Is epoxy worth it in a domestic garage?
