Why is my screw standing proud instead of sitting flush?
Six reasons a screw head stops short of the surface, how to tell them apart in ten seconds, and which ones you must not solve by turning harder.

Short answer
Work out first whether the screw is still turning freely or has gone solid. Freely turning means the hole has stripped. Solid means it has bottomed out, hit something, or the head has no recess to sit in. Only the last of those is fixed by cutting a countersink — the rest get worse if you force them.
A proud screw is a symptom with several quite different causes, and the instinct to lean on the driver is right for exactly one of them and destructive for the others. Ten seconds spent working out which case you have saves a stripped hole, a snapped screw or a cracked hinge leaf.
Step by step
- Turn it a quarter turn and feel what happens.Spinning with no resistance means the thread has nothing to grip. Rock solid means something is physically in the way. A gradual increase means it is simply tight.
- If it spins freely, the hole has stripped.Do not keep turning. Move the fixing, go up a gauge, or repair the hole with a glued dowel, plug or matchsticks and start again.
- If it is solid, check for a countersink.A countersunk head needs a cone. In hardwood, in metal, in plastic and in any hinge or plate with a shallow recess, a head with nowhere to go simply stops. Cut the countersink and it drops flush.
- Check the screw is not bottoming out.A screw longer than the hole is deep hits solid material and stops. Measure the screw against the depth and either drill deeper or use a shorter screw.
- Check for debris under the head or in the recess.A single shaving, a bead of paint, an old washer or a lump of filler in the counterbore will hold a head a millimetre proud, which looks exactly like a mechanical problem.
- Check the head against the hole it is going into.A countersunk head in a hinge made for a smaller gauge, or a pan head in a countersunk recess, will never sit down. Match the head shape to the recess shape.
- Check the two pieces are actually closed.If the boards below are being held apart by a jacking thread, the head sits proud by exactly the size of the gap. That is a different problem with its own fix.
- Only then apply more force, and only a little.If it is genuinely just tight in sound material with a proper recess, push hard into the drive and turn slowly. Pressure, not torque, is what stops a bit camming out.
Tips
- On a hinge or a lock plate, a proud head is not cosmetic — it stops the door closing and it will chew the frame. Fix it before hanging.
- In metal or plastic, a countersunk head needs a countersunk hole, and drilling one takes a countersink bit rather than a bigger drill.
- If the screw is proud in chipboard furniture and spinning, going up one gauge in the same hole is the quickest reliable repair.
Common mistakes
- Forcing a screw that is spinning — There is nothing left to grip and every turn enlarges the hole further, which turns a small repair into a large one.
- Countersinking deeper to bury a bottomed-out screw — The screw is stopped at the point, not the head. Cutting the surface away just weakens the material and leaves the head below the surface with the same load.
