Resin anchor or expansion bolt — which should I use?

Short answer
An expansion bolt works by pressing outwards, so it needs strong solid material and room around it. A resin anchor bonds along the hole and applies no outward pressure, so it suits soft, hollow, cracked or close-to-edge situations. In sound dense concrete either works; everywhere else, resin is the safer answer.
Both are heavy-duty fixings and they are often sold side by side, but they carry load in fundamentally different ways and that difference decides which is appropriate.
Step by step
- Understand the expansion bolt.A sleeve or wedge is forced outward against the hole wall as the bolt is tightened. All the load is carried by friction and by the material's ability to resist that outward pressure.
- Understand the resin anchor.Resin is injected into a cleaned hole and a threaded stud is pushed in. When cured, the resin bonds to both the stud and the hole wall along its whole length, transferring load in shear rather than by pressure.
- Check the substrate.Dense concrete and hard engineering brick suit expansion bolts. Soft brick, aerated block, hollow block, old lime-mortared walls and anything friable need resin.
- Check the edge distance.An expansion bolt close to an edge or a corner splits the material outwards. Resin exerts no such force and can be used far closer to an edge — which is often the deciding factor.
- Consider hollow substrates.In hollow block or perforated brick, an expansion bolt has nothing to expand against. Resin with a mesh sleeve forms a key inside the void and is the standard solution.
- Consider whether you will need to remove it.Expansion bolts can often be slackened and withdrawn or knocked in. A resin anchor is permanent — the stud can be cut off but not extracted.
- Consider time and conditions.An expansion bolt is loaded the moment it is tightened. Resin needs a cure time that lengthens sharply in the cold, and needs a scrupulously clean and dry hole.
- Match the fixing to the load direction.Both handle shear well. For sustained tension — anything hanging — resin's uniform bond is usually the more reliable, particularly in anything less than perfect masonry.
Tips
- Hole cleanliness matters far more for resin than for an expansion bolt. Dust in the hole can halve the bond.
- If in doubt near an edge or a corner, use resin. Splitting the masonry with an expansion bolt is a common and expensive failure.
- For handrails, gates, heavy brackets and anything safety critical, resin into sound material is the specification most engineers would expect.
Common mistakes
- Using an expansion bolt in hollow or aerated block — There is nothing solid for it to expand against, so the sleeve crushes the material or expands into a void and the bolt tightens against nothing.
- Loading a resin anchor before it has cured — Partially cured resin has a fraction of its strength and disturbing the stud breaks the bond permanently. The anchor may still feel firm and fail later.
If it doesn't work
Expansion bolt turns without tightening
Cause: Hole oversize, or material crushed by the expansion — Fix: Move to sound material, or clean the hole and use a resin anchor instead.
Crack radiating from an expansion bolt
Cause: Too close to an edge, or overtightened — Fix: Remove the load immediately. Repair the masonry and refix with resin further from the edge.
Resin anchor pulled out cleanly with a smooth surface
Cause: Dust left in the hole, so the resin bonded to dust rather than masonry — Fix: Clean out thoroughly — brush, blow, brush — and reset. This is the commonest resin failure by a wide margin.
Resin never hardened
Cause: Unmixed resin from the start of the cartridge, or temperature below the working range — Fix: Always discard the first few centimetres until the mixed colour is uniform, and check the minimum temperature on the cartridge.
Questions people ask
Are concrete screws an alternative?
Yes, for many jobs. They cut their own thread in a precisely drilled hole in sound concrete or hard brick, are removable, and avoid expansion forces. They are less tolerant of soft or inaccurate holes.
Can I use resin in a wet hole?
Some resins are formulated for damp or even flooded holes; most are not. Check the cartridge, because ordinary resin in a wet hole will not bond.
How much does the hole cleaning really matter?
Enough that manufacturers publish a specific sequence of brushing and blowing. Skipping it is the difference between the published load and a fixing you should not trust.
