How do I remove blood, milk and egg stains?
Protein stains behave as a group and all need the same thing: cold water and no heat at any point, because heat cooks the protein permanently into the fibre.

Short answer
Cold water only, from the first rinse to the final wash. Rinse from the back of the fabric, soak in cold water with a biological detergent, and check the mark has gone before it goes anywhere near a dryer. Hot water sets a protein stain in seconds and nothing removes it afterwards.
Blood, milk, egg, sweat, gravy and vomit are all protein. Protein coagulates with heat — the same change that turns a raw egg white solid — and once it has set inside the fibre it is part of the cloth. Almost every ruined protein stain was ruined by warm water or a dryer, not by the stain itself.

Step by step
- Use cold water and keep using it.Every rinse, every soak and the wash itself. There is no stage at which warm water helps a protein stain, and one hot rinse is enough to set it for good.
- Rinse from the back of the fabric.Hold the garment stain-side down under the cold tap so the water pushes the stain back out the way it came, rather than through the rest of the cloth.
- Blot, never rub.Rubbing drives protein deeper between the fibres and roughens the surface, which leaves a dull patch that stays visible after the stain has gone.
- Soak in cold water with a biological detergent.The enzymes in biological detergent digest protein, which is exactly what is needed here. Thirty minutes for a fresh mark, several hours or overnight for a dried one.
- Work salt into fresh blood on a cloth you cannot soak.A paste of salt and cold water drawn across the mark lifts a surprising amount out of upholstery and mattresses without wetting them through.
- Wash on the coolest cycle the label allows.Thirty degrees with a biological detergent. The enzymes stop working above about forty degrees anyway, so a hotter wash is worse on both counts.
- Check the fabric before drying it.Hold it up to the light while wet. A faint shadow that looks like nothing wet becomes a permanent brown mark once the dryer has been near it.
- Repeat the same treatment rather than escalating.A stubborn protein stain usually needs a second soak, not a stronger chemical. Two cold soaks beat one attempt with something harsh almost every time.
Tips
- Your own saliva shifts a small fresh blood spot remarkably well — the enzymes in it are the same class as those in biological detergent.
- Wool and silk cannot take biological detergent; the enzymes attack the protein in the fibre as readily as the stain. Cold water and a wool-safe wash only.
- Dried blood responds to a long cold soak far better than to any amount of scrubbing. Leave it overnight and check in the morning.
Common mistakes
- Reaching for hot water because the stain looks serious — It is the single action that makes a protein stain permanent. The protein sets into the fibre exactly as an egg sets in a pan, and no product reverses it.
- Tumble drying before checking — The dryer applies far more heat than any wash. A stain that survived the wash unseen is baked in by the dryer and becomes a yellow-brown shadow that will not shift.
If it doesn't work
Brown mark left after washing
Cause: The stain met heat at some point — Fix: Soak in cold water with an oxygen bleach powder for several hours. It sometimes lightens a set stain, but expect an improvement rather than a removal.
Ring around where the stain was
Cause: Water pushed the stain outwards instead of out of the fabric — Fix: Rewet the whole panel rather than the spot, work from the outside of the ring inwards, and blot dry.
Stain gone but the fabric looks dull there
Cause: Rubbing has abraded the surface fibres — Fix: Nothing removes it. Wash the garment inside out in future and blot rather than rub.
Questions people ask
Does hydrogen peroxide work on blood?
It does, and it fizzes impressively, but it also bleaches. Test on a hidden seam first and keep it off coloured and delicate fabrics — a cold soak with biological detergent is safer and nearly as effective.
What about blood on a mattress that I cannot rinse?
Work a cold paste of bicarbonate of soda or salt into the mark, leave it half an hour, then blot with a cloth wrung out in cold water. The point is to avoid soaking the mattress, which takes days to dry and can grow mould.
