How do I remove hard water marks from glass?

Short answer
Limescale is alkaline, so it needs an acid rather than a detergent. White vinegar or a limescale remover, given time to work rather than scrubbed, dissolves it. A squeegee afterwards stops it returning.
Hard water marks are mineral deposits left behind as water evaporates. No amount of detergent shifts them because detergent works on grease, not minerals — the fix is chemical, and the main ingredient is patience.

Step by step
- Use an acid, not a detergent.White vinegar, lemon juice or a proprietary limescale remover. Ordinary bathroom spray will not touch established scale.
- Give it contact time.The main thing people get wrong. Fifteen to thirty minutes, not thirty seconds. Time does the work, not pressure.
- Keep it in contact on vertical surfaces.Vinegar runs straight off a shower screen. Soak kitchen roll and press it against the glass, or use cling film over the top to hold it in place.
- Reapply rather than scrubbing harder.For heavy deposits, two or three applications. Abrasive scrubbing scratches glass permanently, and scratched glass then collects scale faster.
- Use a plastic scraper for thick deposits.After softening. A plastic razor scraper held flat lifts softened scale without scratching. Never a metal blade on glass.
- Rinse and dry thoroughly.Any acid residue attracts dirt. Rinse well, then dry with a microfibre cloth to avoid new marks.
- Squeegee after every shower.Thirty seconds, and it is the only thing that genuinely prevents it. Marks form as water evaporates, so removing the water removes the problem.
- Consider a rinse aid or glass sealant.A water-repellent glass treatment makes water sheet off rather than bead. It needs reapplying every few months and it does work.
Tips
- Etched glass cannot be recovered. If marks remain after proper acid treatment, the minerals have damaged the surface and the answer is replacement or living with it.
- In a hard water area, a shower screen needs the squeegee habit rather than a stronger cleaner. Prevention is dramatically easier than removal.
- Keep acid off natural stone, and off any metal trim you are unsure about — some finishes mark.
