Short answer

Limescale is calcium carbonate and dissolves in acid. Soak the affected item in white vinegar or citric acid solution for one to four hours, then scrub off the softened residue. Never use acid on natural stone, cement grout or anodised metal — it damages all three.

Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. When it evaporates or is heated, those minerals precipitate out as the chalky white deposit on your kettle element and around your taps. Because it is a mineral rather than dirt, no amount of detergent or scrubbing removes it efficiently — but it dissolves readily in weak acid, which is why every effective method below is a variation on 'apply acid, wait'.

Safety

Never mix an acidic descaler with bleach or any chlorine-based cleaner — the combination releases chlorine gas. Acids also permanently etch marble, limestone, travertine and other natural stone, and slowly degrade cement grout. Test on a hidden area if you are unsure what a surface is.

What you'll need

  • White vinegar or citric acid powder
  • Cloths or kitchen roll
  • Freezer bag and elastic band (for tap spouts and shower heads)
  • Old toothbrush (optional)
  • Descaler for appliances (optional)

Step by step

  1. Identify the surface before applying anything.Chrome, glass, plastic and stainless steel are fine. Natural stone, cement grout and anodised aluminium are not.
  2. For a kettle, fill it with equal parts white vinegar and water, boil, then leave to stand for an hour.Boil and rinse two or three times afterwards or your next cup of tea will taste of vinegar.
  3. For taps and shower heads, fill a freezer bag with vinegar and tie it around the fitting so the scale is submerged.Elastic band around the neck of the bag. Leave one to four hours depending on how bad it is.
  4. For a toilet, turn off the supply, flush to lower the water, then apply descaler or vinegar to the exposed scale line. The scale is below the water line, so you have to lower the water to reach it.
  5. For general surfaces, soak kitchen roll in vinegar and press it onto the deposit.Acid runs off a vertical surface immediately — the paper holds it in contact long enough to work.
  6. After the soak, scrub the softened deposit off with a brush or cloth. It should come away easily. If it doesn't, it needs longer rather than harder scrubbing.
  7. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry.Leftover acid keeps working slowly on seals and finishes.

Tips

  • Citric acid powder (sold for brewing and cleaning) is stronger, cheaper by volume and doesn't smell. A tablespoon in 500ml of hot water is a good general strength.
  • Drying surfaces after use is the actual prevention: limescale only forms where hard water is left to evaporate. A quick squeegee of the shower screen removes the problem entirely.
  • Shower heads with rubber nozzles: rub the softened scale off the nozzles with a thumb after soaking — they're designed to flex for exactly this.
  • If your whole house is affected, check whether you're in a hard water area. A water softener is a significant purchase but changes everything downstream of it.

Common mistakes

  • Using acid descaler on marble or limestone — It etches the stone permanently — dull white marks that cannot be polished out at home.
  • Mixing descaler with bleach — Releases chlorine gas.
  • Scrubbing scale off dry — You scratch the chrome and barely dent the deposit. Soak first, always.
  • Not rinsing a kettle enough afterwards — Several rinses and a discarded boil are needed — vinegar taste lingers.

Questions people ask

Is limescale harmful?

Not to drink — the minerals are the same ones present in hard water generally. It is however hard on appliances: scale on a heating element makes a kettle, boiler or washing machine less efficient and shortens its life.

How often should I descale a kettle?

In a hard water area, monthly. In a soft water area you may never need to. The visible sign is the flaky white coating on the element or a film on the surface of the water.

Will vinegar damage chrome taps?

Not in normal use — chrome plating is acid-resistant. Prolonged soaking of *anodised* or brushed finishes is a different matter, and those should be treated briefly and rinsed well.
