How do I protect my devices from power cuts and surges?

Short answer
Sudden power loss rarely damages modern electronics, but it does risk the file being written at that moment and, occasionally, a drive's file system. The measures worth taking are unglamorous: back up properly, plug the router and the desktop into a small uninterruptible supply if outages are common where you live, and use a decent surge-protected extension rather than a bare one.
Two different things get conflated here. A power cut is a loss of supply, and its main risk is to whatever was being written at the time. A surge is a brief spike in voltage — from lightning nearby, or from the supply being restored — and its risk is to the electronics themselves. They need different answers, and the honest position is that most households need very little.

- Deal with a wet or storm-damaged device properly.If lightning has struck nearby and something is dead, do not open it looking for a fuse. Unplug it, note it for the insurance, and have it assessed. Damaged mains equipment is not a household repair.

- Frequent brief flickers are harder on equipment than one long cut, and are worth mentioning to the network operator — the fault is often on their side and they will investigate.
- If the household has a network drive doing the backups, that is the one device where an uninterruptible supply earns its keep, because a cut during a write is the worst possible moment.

Common mistakes
- Assuming a surge-protected strip protects against everything — It reduces moderate spikes. A close lightning strike can arrive through the aerial lead, the phone line or the earth as easily as through the mains, and nothing plug-in will stop it.
- Daisy-chaining extension leads to reach a socket — It is a fire risk regardless of any surge protection, and it defeats the protection anyway. Use one properly rated lead of the right length.

Cause: Usually the power supply has latched off, occasionally a file system problem — Fix: Switch off at the wall, wait a minute, and try again. If it starts but reports disk errors, let it check the drive fully before using it.
Files corrupted after an outage
Cause: They were being written at the moment power was lost — Fix: Restore from backup. This is the specific risk a power cut creates, and no hardware protection substitutes for having the copy.
Router takes a long time to come back
Cause: Full fibre and cable connections resynchronise on power-up — Fix: Normal — give it five minutes before assuming a fault, and do not restart it repeatedly in the meantime.
Smart devices lost their settings
Cause: Some cloud-dependent devices reset or need to re-pair after a cut — Fix: Expected behaviour on some products. It is a reason to prefer devices that keep working locally without the internet.
