Why is my plywood delaminating?
Delamination means the glue between the veneers has failed, and the usual reason is that the board's bond class was never suitable for where it was used.

Short answer
Plywood is veneers glued in alternating directions, and the bond class of that glue decides what conditions it survives. Interior-grade board used outdoors or in a damp place comes apart. Once the layers have separated the board has lost most of its strength and should be replaced rather than repaired.
The question behind this is usually whether it can be saved, and for anything doing a job the answer is no. Plywood gets its strength from the layers acting together; once they are not bonded, it behaves like a stack of thin veneers. Understanding why it happened matters more, because the replacement will do the same thing if it is the same board.
Step by step
- Look at where the separation is.Delamination almost always starts at an edge or a cut, because that is where moisture gets between the veneers. Separation in the middle of an intact face is unusual and suggests a manufacturing fault or prolonged saturation.
- Work out what got it wet.Rain, a leak, condensation, ground moisture through a slab, or simply an exterior application with unprotected edges. Plywood outdoors with bare cut edges is the classic case.
- Check what grade the board actually was.Bond class describes the glue's resistance to moisture, and it is separate from the face grade that describes appearance. A board that looks good can have an interior bond.
- Accept that a delaminated board is finished.Clamping and gluing separated veneers rarely works: the surfaces are contaminated, the glue line is inaccessible, and the board has usually distorted. For anything structural or load-bearing, replace it.
- Replace with the right bond class for the location.Exterior or marine-bonded board where moisture is expected. This is the decision that prevents a repeat, and it is the only part of this that really matters.
- Seal every cut edge on the replacement.Cutting a sheet exposes the end grain of every veneer and every glue line. Sealing those edges is what keeps water out of the laminations.
- Detail it so water runs off rather than sits.Horizontal plywood outdoors with standing water on it will fail eventually whatever its grade. A fall, a drip edge, or a cover changes the odds far more than the specification does.
Tips
- If a board is delaminating at one edge only and is not structural, cutting the failed strip off and refixing may be a legitimate repair.
- Ventilating both faces matters. Plywood trapped against a damp wall with no airflow fails much sooner than the same board with a cavity behind it.
Common mistakes
- Choosing plywood by the face appearance alone. — Face grade and bond class are different things. A smooth face tells you nothing about whether the glue survives moisture.
- Leaving cut edges bare outdoors. — The edges are the way in. A board with sealed faces and bare edges is an unsealed board.

Can I glue the layers back together?
Occasionally, for a small cosmetic lift on a non-structural panel, with adhesive worked in and proper clamping. For anything carrying load, no — the board has lost the property you are relying on.
Is marine plywood necessary for a shed floor?
Usually not. An exterior bond class with sealed edges and decent detailing is normally the sensible answer. Marine ply is about veneer quality and voids as much as glue.
