My OSB got soaked in the rain — is it ruined?
What happens to OSB when it gets wet, why the swollen edges are the real question, and how to decide between drying it out and replacing it.

Short answer
Usually not ruined, if it is OSB/3 and it was a soaking rather than a soaking that lasted for weeks. OSB swells most at the cut edges and does not fully recover, so let it dry thoroughly, check whether the swelling has left a step at the joints, and sand the edges flat before covering. If the surface is soft, the strands are lifting, or the board sags between supports, replace it.
This is a normal event on almost every self-build and extension: the deck goes down, the roof does not go on for a fortnight, and it rains. OSB is designed for this — OSB/3 is rated for humid conditions and for the exposure of a construction period — but it is not indifferent to it, and the way it fails is specific and easy to check for.

Step by step
- Check which grade you have.OSB/2 is for dry conditions only and does not tolerate wetting. OSB/3 is rated for humid conditions and load-bearing use, and is what almost all UK decking and sheathing is. OSB/4 is heavy duty. The grade is printed on the board.
- Let it dry properly before judging it.Wet OSB looks far worse than it is. Get air moving over both faces, remove standing water, lift anything covering it, and give it days rather than hours. Do not cover it, tile over it or lay flooring on it until it is dry.
- Look at the edges rather than the faces.OSB swells most where the strands are cut, so the damage concentrates at every board edge and every cut. Run a straightedge across a joint: if there is a raised lip either side of the joint, that is the swelling and it does not go back.
- Sand the swollen edges flat.A belt sander or a coarse abrasive along the joints takes the raised lip off and gives you a flat surface again. This is standard practice on a construction site and it is a legitimate fix rather than a bodge.
- Test the board's strength.Walk it and listen. Press a screwdriver into a swollen area. Sound OSB stays firm even when swollen at the edge; failed OSB feels spongy underfoot, the strands lift and separate, and a fixing spins in its hole. That board is finished.
- Check the fixings.Swelling and drying works fixings loose, and swollen board around a screw head can leave it standing proud. Re-drive or replace fixings before covering, and add extra where the board has lifted.
- Deal with the cause before you cover it.A deck that got wet once is normal; a deck that keeps getting wet is a roofing or a drainage problem. Do not lay a floor over OSB that is still being wetted from below or above, and do not seal moisture in by covering damp board with an impermeable finish.
- Replace boards that are visibly failing.Any board with lifting strands, a soft spongy area, edges that crumble, or a visible sag between supports comes out. It costs one board now and a floor later.
Tips
- Sealing the cut edges of OSB before it is exposed — with a proprietary edge sealer or even a good exterior primer — makes a real difference to how it survives a wet construction period.
- Tongue and groove OSB and chipboard flooring boards swell at the tongue and groove too. If a swollen T&G joint is holding a floor apart, that joint has to be dealt with rather than forced together.
- OSB never goes back to its original thickness after swelling. Plan on sanding rather than on recovery.
If it doesn't work
Raised ridges along every board joint after drying
Cause: Edge swelling, which is permanent — Fix: Sand the joints flat with a belt sander or a coarse disc once the board is fully dry, then check with a straightedge before covering.
The surface has gone fuzzy and the strands stand proud
Cause: Surface swelling from prolonged wetting — Fix: If the board is otherwise solid, sand the surface flat. If the strands lift away when you sand, the bond has failed and the board needs replacing.
A soft, spongy area underfoot
Cause: The board has lost its bond, or it is decaying because it stayed wet — Fix: Cut the affected board out entirely back to the joists either side and replace it. Find and fix the source of the water first.
Screws spinning and not tightening
Cause: The board swelled and shrank round the fixings, destroying the thread — Fix: Move the fixing 50mm along and use a longer screw. If several fixings in one board are spinning, the board is going.
Questions people ask
Can I use OSB outside?
Not exposed to the weather permanently, no. OSB/3 tolerates the wetting that happens during construction and is rated for humid conditions, but it is not a weather-resistant cladding or a roofing material. Anything permanently exposed needs an exterior-grade plywood or a purpose-made external board, and it needs a covering.
How wet is too wet?
Time matters more than the soaking itself. A day of rain on OSB/3 that then dries is normal. Weeks standing in water, or board that never dries because it is covered, is what destroys it. If it has been wet for more than a couple of weeks and the strands are lifting, replace it.
Should I have used plywood instead?
Plywood recovers from wetting better than OSB and holds fixings near an edge better, so on a job where the deck will be exposed for a long period it is a fair choice. OSB/3 is cheaper and is what almost all UK housebuilding uses, on the assumption that it gets covered reasonably promptly.
