My plywood or MDF has bowed — can I flatten it?
Why sheets bow in storage, which bows come back and which do not, and the storage that prevents it entirely.

Short answer
A bow caused by uneven moisture — one face exposed and one against a wall — often comes out if you lay the sheet flat, weight it, and give both faces the same air for a few days. A bow set into the sheet by leaning it at an angle for weeks, or by a manufacturing defect, usually does not. Prevention is easy: sheets go flat, or truly vertical against a flat support, never leaning.
Sheet material bows for one reason above all others: one face was gaining or losing moisture faster than the other. A sheet leaning against a garage wall has a warm dry side and a cool damp side, and it curls towards the dry one. The fix follows directly from the cause.

Step by step
- Work out which way it has bowed and why.Lay it on a flat floor and see which way it rocks. Then think about how it was stored: leaning against a wall, one face to a cold wall, one face in the sun, standing on a damp floor. The concave face is the one that lost moisture or was warmer.
- Lay it flat on a genuinely flat surface, convex side up.A flat floor, or several level bearers. Convex — the hump — upwards, so gravity and the weights are working in the right direction.
- Weight it evenly across the whole sheet.Other sheets on top are ideal. Bags of sand, tins of paint spread out, or a sheet with timber laid across it all work. Concentrating the weight in the middle of a stiff sheet bends it locally rather than flattening it.
- Give it time and stable conditions.Days rather than hours, in a room with steady temperature and humidity — ideally the room where it will be used. Both faces need to reach the same moisture content, which is the whole mechanism.
- Help it along by damping the concave face, carefully.If it is not moving, a very light damp wipe over the concave face — the hollow — encourages that side to expand. Use a barely damp cloth, not water, and only on unfinished board. Overdo it on MDF or chipboard and you will swell it permanently.
- Accept it if it will not come back.A sheet that has been leaning at an angle for months, or that arrived bowed from the factory, has usually set. Do not spend a week on it — use it somewhere the bow does not matter, or cut it into smaller pieces.
- Use the cut-it-smaller trick.Bow is a whole-sheet phenomenon and most of it disappears when the sheet is cut down. A sheet that is unusably curved across 2440mm may be perfectly flat in 600mm pieces. Cut your parts out and check them individually.
- Fix a mild bow with the frame.A slightly bowed sheet screwed to a flat frame or a run of battens pulls flat and stays flat. This is legitimate for a fixed panel, a cabinet back, a floor deck or a wall lining — just not for a free-standing shelf or a door.
- Store the rest properly so it does not happen again.Flat, on level bearers, off the floor, with the stack weighted. If you must store vertically, stand sheets truly upright against a flat wall or a full-height batten, not leaning at an angle, and with air on both faces.
Tips
- The single worst thing you can do to sheet material is lean it against a wall at an angle for a fortnight. It bows to the shape you left it in and stays there.
- Thin sheets bow far more readily than thick ones and also flatten far more readily. An 18mm sheet that has set will probably stay set; a 6mm one usually comes back.
- Where a panel must be dead flat — a door, a lid, a visible shelf — use a stable material and store it flat from the day it arrives. Prevention is very much cheaper than any of these fixes.
If it doesn't work
A sheet stored leaning against a garage wall has curled along its length
Cause: Uneven moisture — the wall side stayed damp and cool, the room side dried — Fix: Lay it flat, hump up, weighted, in the room where it will be used, for several days. Mild bows usually come back; long-standing ones often do not.
A sheet is bowed straight out of the pack
Cause: A manufacturing or storage issue at the supplier — Fix: Take it back. A bowed sheet is a defective sheet and merchants will normally exchange it if you raise it promptly.
A cabinet door made from board has bowed after finishing
Cause: Finished on one face only, so the two faces exchange moisture at different rates — Fix: Finish the back face as well, to the same number of coats, then lay it flat and weighted while it settles. Always finish both faces of any board panel.
A shelf has bowed downwards over time
Cause: That is not a storage bow, it is creep under sustained load — Fix: Add a support, shorten the span, or fit a front lipping. A crept shelf will not recover by being turned over — it will simply creep the other way.
Questions people ask
How should I store sheets properly?
Flat is best: on level bearers, off the floor, with the stack weighted at the top and the sheets all the same size so the edges are supported. If space forces vertical storage, stand them truly upright against a flat full-height support, with both faces open to the same air, and not leaning at an angle.
Will a bowed sheet flatten once it is screwed down?
A mild bow, yes — a floor deck, a wall lining or a cabinet back will pull flat and stay flat once fixed at close centres. A pronounced bow puts real stress into the fixings and can pull them out or telegraph through as a wave. Use bowed sheets where they will be restrained, not where they must be flat on their own.
Does the same apply to plasterboard?
Plasterboard is different: it is more flexible and much more fragile, so a bow is less of a problem and breakage is more of one. It is stored on edge or flat and never leaning, and a bowed board straightens as it is screwed to the studs. What ruins plasterboard is a crushed edge or corner, not a bow.
