Why do my plasterboard screws just spin?
A screw that spins has stripped the material around it. In plasterboard that means the board has crumbled; on a stud it means the timber has been over-driven or the hole is too big.

Short answer
Work out first whether you are in board or in timber. In board, a plain screw has nothing to hold it and needs a proper plasterboard fixing instead. On a stud, the screw has been driven too hard or into an oversized hole, and the fix is a longer or thicker screw or moving along slightly.
This is one of the most common moments of confusion in DIY, partly because two completely different failures feel identical through the screwdriver. Plasterboard is a paper-faced gypsum panel with almost no thread-holding ability, and treating it as if it were a solid wall is the underlying mistake.
Step by step
- Establish what is behind the screw.Tap the wall, or check with a detector. A hollow sound means you are in board with a cavity behind. A dull solid sound means a stud, a masonry wall or dot-and-dab. GuideHQ has guides on identifying wall type.
- In plasterboard, stop using a plain screw.Nothing about a woodscrew works in gypsum. The threads crush the board and it spins immediately. This is not a technique problem and there is no way to drive it harder that succeeds.
- Use a fixing designed for board.Self-drive plasterboard plugs, spring toggles, and metal cavity anchors all work by spreading load behind the board rather than gripping in it. Which one depends on the weight and the board thickness.
- Move to a stud where the load matters.Anything genuinely heavy should be fixed to structure, not to board. Find the studs and fix into them. Board fixings hold pictures and small shelves, not televisions and cabinets.
- If you are on a stud, check you have not over-driven it.A screw run in too hard with a powerful driver strips the timber threads. Back it out, and either use a slightly thicker or longer screw, or move fifteen millimetres along and start again.
- Reduce your driver's clutch setting.Most stripping on timber is caused by an impact driver or a drill with the clutch set too high finishing the drive at full power. Lower the setting and finish by hand if in doubt.
- Repair a spun hole in board before refixing.A hole that has been chewed out is now larger than the fixing needs. Fill it and let it set, or move the fixing point. Putting a bigger fixing into damaged board rarely holds.
Common mistakes
- Putting a bigger screw into the same hole. — The material around it has already crumbled. A bigger screw destroys more of it, and the second attempt holds less than the first.
- Relying on a board fixing for a heavy item. — Board fixings distribute load into a thin gypsum panel. There is a limit and it is much lower than people assume — check the manufacturer's figure rather than guessing.

Can I put a wall plug into plasterboard?
Not a standard masonry plug. It relies on being gripped by solid material and simply spins or pushes through. Plasterboard-specific fixings work on a completely different principle.
What if the screw spins in dot-and-dab?
