Short answer
Yes, usually, unless something removed it. Phone cameras record the location in the file along with the date, time and camera details. Most big social platforms strip that on upload, but sending the original file — by email, as a file rather than a photo, or through cloud storage — sends everything with it. Both iPhone and Android can remove the location as you share, and every computer can strip it. If it matters, remove it deliberately rather than hoping.
A photograph is not only an image. Cameras write a block of information into the file describing how the picture was made: the camera or phone model, the settings, the date and time to the second, and — if location services were on — the coordinates, often accurate to a few metres. - Understand that stripping depends entirely on the route.The main social platforms remove this data when you upload, partly for privacy and partly because they re-encode the image anyway. Sending the original file does not: an email attachment, a message sent as a file or a document, a cloud storage link, or a photograph sent at full quality all carry everything. The same picture can be safe by one route and revealing by another.
- Treat marketplace listings as the highest-risk case.Selling something means photographing it where you live and posting it publicly with an invitation to come round. Most listing platforms strip the data, and some do not, and you have no reliable way to check theirs. Remove the location before uploading, and think about what is in the frame — a window view, a house number, a street sign, a school uniform, a parcel label.
- Remove the location on a phone when you share.Both platforms have this built into the share sheet. On an iPhone, the options button at the top of the share screen has a location switch. On Android, the share sheet or the photo's own menu offers to remove location data. It is a per-share choice rather than a permanent setting, which is why it is worth learning where it is rather than looking it up each time.
- Strip it from a file on a computer.Windows can remove personal properties from a file through its properties panel, and macOS can remove the location through the photo application's own menu. Both work on a copy, which is the right way round — you generally want to keep the location on your own library and remove it only from what you send.
- Decide whether to record it at all, and keep the decision narrow.Turning off location for the camera app stops it being recorded in the first place. It also removes the map view of your own library and makes photographs harder to sort later, which is a real loss. For most people the better arrangement is to keep recording it and strip it on the way out; turning it off is the right answer where the risk is specific and ongoing.
- Remember that the picture itself is data.Removing the hidden information does nothing about a recognisable street, a house number in the background, a reflection in a window, a school badge or a distinctive view. Common mistakes
- Assuming every platform strips it — The big social networks generally do; messaging apps sending at full quality, email, cloud links and some smaller sites do not. The same photograph is safe by one route and not by another, and you cannot tell from your end.
- Turning location off for everything to be safe — It removes a genuinely useful feature from your own photo library and does nothing about the far larger question of what is visible in the frame. Strip on sharing instead.
- Stripping the data and posting a picture of your front door — The visible content of a photograph identifies places far more reliably than coordinates do, and no setting addresses it. Look at the frame first.
- Removing metadata from the original rather than a copy — You lose the date and place from your own library permanently. Always work on a copy, or use the share-time option that leaves the original alone.

You want to check whether a photo you already sent had location in it
Cause: The original is still in your library — Fix: Open the original in your photo app and look at its information. If there is a location there, the file you sent had one unless the route stripped it — assume it did not for anything sent as a file.
A photograph in your library has no location and you expected one
Cause: Location services were off, or it came from a messaging app — Fix: Images received through messaging have usually been stripped and re-encoded. That is why photographs saved from a chat are often missing dates and places in your library too.
Your photo library map is empty
Cause: Camera location permission is off — Fix: Turn it on for the camera app if you want the feature. This is a deliberate trade — sortable, mappable memories against data you must remember to strip when sharing.
Removing the location also removed the date
Cause: Some stripping tools remove everything — Fix: Expected with a blanket removal. If you want to keep the date, use the phone's own share option, which removes location specifically rather than clearing everything.
You need to prove where and when a photograph was taken

Can someone find my house from a photo I posted on social media?
