How do I parallel park properly?

A reference-point method that works in any car, why the front swings out more than people expect, and how to adjust when the first attempt is not right.

Short answer

Find a space about one and a half car lengths long. Pull up alongside the car in front of the space, about a metre away, rear bumpers roughly level. Reverse straight until your rear wheels are level with the other car's rear bumper, then turn the wheel fully towards the kerb. When your car is at about 45 degrees, straighten the wheel and continue back. When your front bumper clears the other car's rear corner, turn fully the other way and reverse in. Then straighten up.

Parallel parking is a geometry problem that people try to solve by feel, which is why it is stressful. The car pivots around its rear wheels, so the back goes where you point it and the front swings out in a wide arc — that arc is what hits the car in front, and it is the part drivers consistently underestimate. Once you know that, the method becomes a sequence of positions rather than a judgement, and a sequence of positions can be repeated. The reference points below are approximate and every car is slightly different, but the structure is identical in all of them.

Safety

Most of the risk in parallel parking is to people rather than paintwork. Check for pedestrians, cyclists and children behind you before and throughout the manoeuvre, and never rely solely on a camera or sensors — both have blind spots close to the car. Stop and look properly if anything moves. Pause the manoeuvre entirely rather than rushing it because someone is waiting.

Step by step

  1. Pick a space with room to work.About one and a half times your car's length is comfortable; anything under about 1.2 times is a genuine test. Do not attempt a tight space with traffic queuing behind you until you can do an easy one without thinking.
  2. Signal and stop the traffic behind you clearly.Indicate left, slow early, and stop in a position that makes it obvious what you are doing. Drivers behind are far more patient when they can see the plan; ambiguity is what makes them try to squeeze past.
  3. Position alongside the car in front of the space.Roughly a metre away — close enough to reach across and touch would be too close, and two metres is too far. Line up so your rear bumpers are approximately level. This starting position determines everything after it.
  4. Check all round before reversing.Mirrors, over both shoulders, and out of the rear window. Pedestrians step off pavements into parking spaces constantly, and a child is below the line of a reversing camera. Keep checking throughout, not just at the start.
  5. Reverse straight, then turn fully towards the kerb.Reverse slowly until your rear wheels are roughly level with the rear bumper of the car beside you — on most cars this is when its rear corner appears in your rear side window. Then turn the steering fully towards the kerb and keep reversing slowly.
  6. Straighten at about 45 degrees.When the car is at roughly 45 degrees to the kerb, and you can see the offside headlight of the car behind the space in your interior mirror, straighten the wheel and reverse straight back. This is the step people skip, and skipping it puts the back wheel on the kerb.
  7. Turn fully the other way as the front clears.When your front bumper has cleared the rear corner of the car in front, turn the steering fully the opposite way. The front of the car now swings in. Watch that front corner — this is where the paint gets damaged.
  8. Straighten up and adjust.Reverse until parallel, then pull forward a little to centre yourself in the space. Aim for roughly 30 centimetres from the kerb and reasonably equal gaps front and rear. Nobody parks perfectly first time every time; adjusting is part of the manoeuvre, not a failure.
  9. Practise somewhere empty first.An empty car park with two cardboard boxes or a quiet road on a Sunday morning. Ten minutes of unpressured repetition builds the reference points into muscle memory far faster than a year of stressful attempts in traffic.

Common mistakes

  • Starting too far from the car alongside — The whole geometry depends on the starting offset. Too far out and the car cannot swing in far enough; too close and the front will not clear. About a metre is the figure that works in most cars.
  • Watching only the kerb — The kerb is the least likely thing to cause an expensive problem. The front corner as it swings out, and pedestrians behind, are what actually need watching.

If it doesn't work

Ended up too far from the kerb

Cause: Turned towards the kerb too late, or straightened too early — Fix: Pull forward, straighten, and start again with the initial turn a little earlier. Or, if you are close, pull forward turning away from the kerb and reverse back turning towards it to shuffle in.

Rear wheel hit the kerb

Cause: Held full lock too long instead of straightening at 45 degrees — Fix: The straightening step is what prevents this. Pull forward and retry with a definite straight phase in the middle.

Front corner too close to the car in front

Cause: The front swung out further than expected — Fix: Stop, pull forward slightly straightening the wheel, then continue. The front of the car travels a wide arc and it is always further than it looks.

Traffic queuing behind and you feel rushed

Cause: Pressure, not technique — Fix: Stop, indicate, and take your time — or pull forward, let them past, and start again. A rushed manoeuvre with an audience is how cars get scraped.

Reversing camera makes it harder rather than easier

Cause: Watching the screen instead of the mirrors and the road — Fix: Use the mirrors and windows as the primary reference and the camera as a check for obstacles low down. The camera's guidelines are useful for distance behind, not for the geometry of the manoeuvre.

Space looked big enough and was not

Cause: Cars are longer than they look and the space is measured between bumpers — Fix: Drive past slowly and judge against your own car's length before committing. Trying and failing in front of an audience is exactly the pressure you are trying to avoid.

Questions people ask

Are parking sensors and cameras enough?

They are a useful check and no substitute for looking. Sensors have a genuine blind spot close to the bumper and are poor at detecting narrow objects such as posts; cameras miss anything low or to the side. Use them alongside the mirrors and shoulder checks, not instead.

How much space do I actually need?

About one and a half times your car's length is comfortable. Skilled drivers manage considerably less, but the margin for error shrinks quickly and the cost of getting it wrong is someone else's bumper. Judge against your own car rather than a general rule.

Does self-parking work?

The systems fitted to many modern cars work well in the conditions they were designed for — a clearly defined space between two parked cars, with a visible kerb. They are slower than a competent driver, they refuse marginal spaces, and you remain responsible throughout. Useful, not a replacement for the skill.
