How do I work out which layer my paint failed at?
Turn the flake over. Whatever is stuck to the back of it names the layer that let go — and that single observation decides the entire repair.

Short answer
Pick off a flake and look at its underside. Clean paint on the back means the coats above separated. A smooth shiny imprint means the primer never bonded to the substrate. Plaster, distemper, rust or render on the back means the paint held and the wall gave way — which is a completely different job.
Peeling paint gets treated as one problem with one answer: scrape it, prime it, repaint it. That works about half the time. The other half comes back, because the failure was not where people assumed. A coating system has three or four interfaces and any of them can be the weak one, and you can identify which in about a minute with nothing but a fingernail and good light.

Step by step
- Take a sample rather than looking at the wall.Lift a flake off intact, as large as you can get. The information is on its underside, not on the surface you have been looking at. Take samples from more than one place if the failure is widespread.
- Failure plane one — between topcoat and undercoat.The back of the flake is clean paint of a different colour, and the layer beneath is intact and firmly attached. Causes: recoating outside the paint's window so the coats never bonded, dust or grease left between coats, or water-based over solvent-based with no key. Repair: cut back the loose material, feather the edges, abrade the sound coat below properly, then recoat.
- Failure plane two — between undercoat and primer.Less common. Usually incompatible products, or a primer left exposed for weeks before the next coat so it weathered and chalked. Repair: take the failed layers off back to the primer, check the primer is still sound and adherent, abrade it, and if in doubt reprime.
- Failure plane three — between primer and substrate.The back of the flake is smooth and shiny and carries a faint imprint of the surface — and the substrate revealed is clean. The primer never bonded. Causes: a glossy, greasy, dusty or damp surface, or the wrong primer for that substrate. Repair: strip the area fully, identify why the surface rejected the primer, prepare it correctly and use the right primer for that material.
- Failure plane four — inside the substrate itself.The back of the flake carries plaster, chalky distemper, powdery render, rust scale or crumbling filler. The paint did its job; the material behind it broke apart. This is cohesive failure, and repainting solves nothing. Repair: remove or stabilise the failed material — wash off distemper, cut out loose plaster and make good, take rusted metal back to sound, brush and stabilise chalking masonry — and only then rebuild the coating.
- Then ask why, and check for water.Even after identifying the plane, ask what put it there. Widespread failure on one wall, failure concentrated low down, failure around a window or a chimney, or failure that returns after a good repair all point to moisture. Find the water before you buy paint.
- Repair to the plane you found, not to the visible edge.Scraping stops where the paint stops coming off, but the weak zone extends further. Work outwards until you reach material that genuinely will not lift, feather the edges back, and take the repair to a natural break if the finish will show.
Tips
- The tape test settles arguments: press strong tape firmly onto the suspect area, pull it off sharply, and see what comes with it and from which layer.
- Photograph the back of a flake next to a ruler before you scrape everything off. If you end up asking a decorator or a manufacturer's technical line, that photo answers most of their questions.
- Failure that follows a clear boundary — one wall, one elevation, below a line, around an opening — is almost always about the building rather than the paint.
Common mistakes
- Scraping, priming and repainting without looking at the back of a flake — You repair the interface you assumed failed. If the real plane was deeper, the new paint comes off in the same place within a year.
- Treating cohesive substrate failure as an adhesion problem — No primer bonds loose material to itself well enough to hold a paint film. Distemper, chalking render and friable plaster have to be removed or genuinely stabilised.
- Repainting before finding the water — Moisture-driven failure recurs regardless of how good the coating system is. Paint is the last step of that repair, not the first.
If it doesn't work
Back of the flake is clean paint of another colour
Cause: Intercoat adhesion failure — recoat window missed or a contaminated surface — Fix: Cut back and feather, abrade the sound layer thoroughly, clean off all dust, and recoat within the correct window.
Back of the flake is smooth, shiny and clean
Cause: Primer never bonded to the substrate — Fix: Strip back, degrease and key the substrate, and use the correct primer for that material — adhesion primer for a non-porous surface, sealer for a porous one.
Back of the flake carries plaster, chalk or rust
Cause: The substrate failed, not the coating — Fix: Remove or stabilise the failed material first. Repainting over it repeats the failure exactly.
Repaired areas fail again in the same places
Cause: An unresolved moisture source — Fix: Stop redecorating and investigate: check for leaks, penetrating damp, condensation on cold surfaces, and failed pointing or seals above the affected area.
Questions people ask
Why does my paint keep peeling in the same spot?
Because the underlying cause has not changed. Either the substrate there is unsound, or water is reaching that spot. Identify the failure plane, then look for what is feeding it.
Can I just use a better paint?
Only if the failure plane is between two coats and was caused by the paint's own recoat behaviour. If the primer failed to bond or the substrate crumbled, a better topcoat changes nothing.
How far back should I scrape?
Until the paint genuinely will not lift with a scraper. The visible edge of the failure is not the edge of the weakened zone, and stopping at it means the repair peels back from its own perimeter.
