Why has my oak gone black or blue?

Short answer

Tannin in the oak has reacted with iron — from steel wool fragments, a steel screw or nail, a damp tool, or hard water on a steel fixing. Remove any remaining iron, then treat the stain with oxalic acid, which reverses the reaction, and neutralise and rinse afterwards.

Oak is high in tannic acid, and tannin plus iron plus moisture produces iron tannate — a blue-black compound that has been used deliberately as ink and as a wood dye for centuries. On a piece of oak you are trying to finish, it is a stain that spreads outwards from wherever the iron is, and it will not sand out because it has penetrated well below the surface.

Oxalic acid is a poison. It is harmful if swallowed, burns skin and eyes, and its dust must not be inhaled. Wear gloves and eye protection, mix and use it outdoors or with good ventilation, keep it away from children, pets and food surfaces, and wash thoroughly afterwards. Never use it on a food-preparation surface without a full rinse and neutralisation.

Step by step

  1. Find and remove the iron.Look for steel screws, nails, staples, a forgotten washer, or fragments of steel wool caught in the grain. Steel wool used on oak leaves microscopic pieces behind that then react at every damp spot, which is why the stain often appears as scattered specks rather than one patch. Remove every ferrous item before treating.
  2. Confirm it is an iron reaction and not something else.Iron tannate is a distinctive blue-black, follows the shape of whatever the iron was, and spreads with the grain. Mould is fuzzy and surface-level, water staining is grey-brown, and general darkening is uniform. Different problems, different fixes.
  3. Strip the finish off the affected area.Oxalic acid works on bare timber. Remove any finish over the stain and a good margin around it, because the treatment will lighten the wood and you need to be able to blend the edges.
  4. Mix and apply oxalic acid solution.Dissolve the crystals in warm water to the strength on the packet, and apply generously to the stained area with a brush or a cloth, wearing gloves and eye protection. Keep the surface wet with it for the stated time. The stain lifts as it works, often visibly within minutes.
  5. Rinse thoroughly and neutralise.Rinse repeatedly with clean water, then neutralise with a weak solution of bicarbonate of soda, then rinse again. Residual acid crystals left in the timber interfere with the finish and remain a hazard. Let the wood dry completely — a day or more.
  6. Sand back the raised grain and reassess.The water will have raised the grain badly. Once dry, sand back with the final grit you were using. Look at the colour: oxalic acid lightens the surrounding timber as well as the stain, so you may need to blend the colour back with a light stain.
  7. Prevent it recurring.Use brass, stainless steel or coated fixings in oak, particularly outdoors where damp and tannin are both guaranteed. Never use steel wool on oak, or on any timber that will get a water-based finish — use an abrasive pad instead. Do not leave damp steel tools standing on oak.

Tips

  • Outdoors, black streaks running down oak cladding or a green oak frame from every fixing is the same reaction at scale. Stainless steel fixings prevent it entirely and are worth the extra cost.
  • The same reaction can be used deliberately: steel wool dissolved in vinegar, brushed onto oak, gives a convincing weathered grey-black. If that is the look you want, it is free.
  • Oxalic acid lightens the surrounding wood as well as the stain, so treat a whole panel or a whole face rather than a spot, and blend the colour afterwards.

Common mistakes

  • Sanding to remove the stain — Iron tannate penetrates well below the surface. You will sand through a veneer or badly hollow a solid surface long before the colour goes.
  • Using steel wool on oak — It leaves fragments in the grain that react with tannin at the first sign of moisture, giving scattered black specks that appear days later.
  • Not neutralising after the acid — Residual oxalic acid crystals in the timber interfere with adhesion of the finish and remain a contact hazard on a surface people touch.

Cause: Steel fixings reacting with tannin in the presence of moisture — Fix: Remove the screws, treat with oxalic acid, and refix with stainless steel or brass.

Scattered black specks appearing after finishing

Cause: Steel wool fragments left in the grain — Fix: Remove the finish, pick or vacuum out visible fragments, treat with oxalic acid, and use an abrasive pad in future.

Black streaks down external oak cladding

Cause: Tannin washing out and reacting with iron in fixings or in the water — Fix: Change to stainless fixings. The staining will weather and fade over time, and oxalic acid can be used on accessible areas.
