Why does my wood feel rough after the first coat?
Sanding bends fibres over rather than cutting them off. The first wet coat stands them up again and locks them there — and the fix takes five minutes if you do it at the right moment.

Short answer
Water in the finish has swollen the surface fibres so they stood up and cured in place. Once the coat is hard, shear them off with a very light pass of fine abrasive, dust off, and the next coats stay smooth. It only has to be done properly once.
It is one of the more demoralising moments in finishing: a surface sanded to a glassy smoothness, one coat applied, and it comes up feeling like fine sandpaper. Nothing has gone wrong. Abrasive paper shears some surface fibres off and simply folds others over, and a folded fibre lies flat and feels smooth while remaining attached at one end. Water swells it, it straightens, and the finish cures around it.

Step by step
- Let the coat cure hard before touching it.A partly cured film clogs the abrasive and tears rather than shearing the fibres cleanly. Wait until the surface is genuinely hard — the time on the tin, and longer in a cold room.
- De-nib with a very fine abrasive and almost no pressure.One light pass with the grain, using 240 to 400 grit or a fine abrasive pad. You are shearing off the tips of raised fibres level with the film, not sanding the coat back. This takes minutes on a door and it is the whole fix.
- Stop before you cut through.The first coat is thin, and cutting through it on an edge or a high spot exposes bare or stained timber that will show as a pale patch. Go very lightly on edges, mouldings and corners, or skip them and use a pad.
- Dust off completely.Vacuum, then wipe with a tack cloth. Fine dust left on the surface is picked up by the next coat and becomes exactly the roughness you have just removed.
- Expect the second coat to stay smooth.The fibres that were capable of rising have now been removed. Subsequent coats sit on a stable surface, and a light de-nib between them is about appearance rather than necessity.
- Raise the grain deliberately next time.Before any finish, after final sanding, wipe the bare timber over with a barely damp cloth, let it dry completely, then sand very lightly with the final grit again. This raises and removes the fibres while the wood is still bare, so the first coat of finish goes onto a surface that cannot fuzz. Repeat once on a piece where the finish really matters.
- Choose the finish with this in mind.Water-based stains, varnishes and lacquers raise grain the most, because water swells cell walls. Oil and solvent-based finishes barely raise it at all. If a piece has a lot of intricate detail that will be hard to de-nib, that is a real argument for an oil-based product.
Tips
- On turned or carved work where abrasive paper cannot reach, an abrasive pad or fine steel wool follows the shape — but never use steel wool with a water-based finish or on oak, because the fragments react with the timber and stain it black.
- A worn piece of fine abrasive is better for de-nibbing than a fresh one. Use paper that has already done some work.
- On end grain, expect more roughness and more coats. It absorbs far more and fuzzes far more than face grain.
Common mistakes
- Sanding the raised grain before the coat has hardened — The abrasive tears the soft film instead of shearing the fibres, and you end up with drag marks on top of the roughness.
- Using too coarse a grit to knock the fuzz off — It cuts through the thin first coat and leaves scratch marks that show clearly under the following coats.
- Assuming a rough first coat means the sanding was inadequate — It means the sanding was normal. Grain raising happens on properly sanded wood too — it is the water in the finish, not the preparation.
