Why does my phone say there is not enough storage to back up?

The message is about your account, not your phone — where the space has actually gone, and the item that is nearly always the culprit.

Short answer

This is the cloud meter, not the phone. Open the account's storage page and look for old device backups — a backup for a phone you no longer own is very often the single largest item and is safe to delete once you are sure. Then check what each app is including in the backup, and turn off the ones that do not need it.

A phone that will not back up is unprotected in every respect, so this is worth fixing the day it starts. The message is confusing because it says storage and people go and delete things from the phone, which changes nothing.

Two separate storage meters — the phone and the account

Step by step

  1. Open the account storage page, not the phone storage page.It is in the account section at the top of the phone's settings, under the storage or subscription heading, and it is also reachable from the account's website. It shows the breakdown by category: backups, photos, files, mail.
  2. Look for backups of devices you no longer have. Both platforms keep old device backups indefinitely. A household commonly carries three or four of them, each several gigabytes. Deleting a backup for a phone that was sold two years ago is safe and often solves the problem outright.
  3. Check what the current backup is including. The backup settings list apps by the size they contribute. Large offenders are usually apps that store downloaded media locally: podcast apps, offline maps, downloaded video, and games. Turning those off in the backup loses nothing you cannot re-download.
  4. Check whether the photo library is in the backup. If photo sync is on, photographs are stored in the photo library rather than in the device backup, and the backup is small. If photo sync is off, the library may be inside the backup and dominating it. Which arrangement you want is a real decision — see the guides on sync and backup.
  5. Empty the photo bin and the file bin.Deleted photographs and files count against the account until they are purged. Emptying them is instant and can free a lot — but only do it once you are certain there is nothing in there you want.
  6. Look at mail attachments on Apple accounts.Mail shares the allowance and years of attachments add up quietly. Sorting the mailbox by size and clearing the largest handful is quick.
  7. Then decide whether to buy a larger tier.If the account is genuinely storing what it should and is still full, the free allowance is simply too small for a modern phone. The next tier up is usually inexpensive and removes the problem permanently.

If it doesn't work

Deleted things and the figure has not moved

Cause: Items are in a bin still counted, or the figure is cached — Fix: Empty the photo and file bins explicitly, then give it a few hours. The storage page updates on its own schedule rather than instantly.

Backup fails even though there is space

Cause: A stalled or corrupted backup, or a single app failing to back up — Fix: Delete the existing backup for this device and take a fresh one on wi-fi with the phone plugged in and locked. It sounds alarming to delete the backup, but a backup that will not complete is not protecting anything anyway.

Backup only runs when you watch it

Cause: Both platforms only back up when charging, locked and on wi-fi — Fix: Plug in overnight on wi-fi and leave the screen off. A phone that is never plugged in overnight may never back up at all.
