Short answer

Budget from what you actually spent last month, not from what you think you should spend. Most budgets fail because they were aspirational, and the first unplanned expense proves them wrong.

The common failure is building a budget from intentions. It works for a fortnight, then a car repair or a birthday arrives, the budget is already wrong, and it gets abandoned. Building from evidence and allowing for the irregular is what makes one hold.

Safety

This describes a method for tracking and planning spending. It is not financial advice. If you are struggling with debt, free and independent advice is available from established debt charities and is more useful than any budgeting method.

Step by step

  1. Start from three months of actual spending.Download the statements and categorise them. This is the only honest starting point, and it usually contains at least one surprise.
  2. Separate fixed, irregular and flexible.Fixed: rent, bills, subscriptions. Irregular: car service, insurance, birthdays, Christmas. Flexible: food, going out, clothes. Most budgets ignore the middle category, which is exactly what breaks them.
  3. Give the irregular costs a monthly figure.Add up a year of them, divide by twelve, and treat that as a fixed monthly cost. This is the single change that stops a budget being derailed every few weeks.
  4. Use separate accounts or pots. One for bills, one for irregular costs, one for spending. When the spending account is empty, that is the signal — no mental arithmetic required.
  5. Automate on payday.Standing orders moving money the day it arrives. A budget that depends on remembering to move money each month depends on a good month.
  6. Build in a buffer.A small amount unallocated. A budget with no slack fails the first time anything unexpected happens, which is every month.
  7. Keep the categories few.Five or six. Detailed category systems are abandoned within weeks. "Food", "transport", "fun" is enough to be useful and simple enough to maintain.
  8. Review monthly and adjust.Twenty minutes. A budget is a plan that gets revised, not a rule you failed. Consistently overspending a category usually means the figure was wrong.

Tips

  • The irregular expenses category is the one that matters. Most budgets are fine until the car needs tyres.
  • Track for a month before changing anything. Awareness alone changes spending, and you find out what your real numbers are.
  • A budget that allows for things you enjoy survives. One built on eliminating them does not.

Questions people ask

Why do budgets never work for me?

Usually because they were built from intentions rather than actual spending, and because irregular costs like car repairs and birthdays were not budgeted monthly. Both are fixable.

How many categories should a budget have?

Five or six. Detailed systems get abandoned. Broad categories that you actually maintain are more useful than precise ones you stop updating.
