Short answer
Go through twelve months of statements, not one — annual subscriptions only appear once. Check the app store subscription lists and your email for "your subscription" and "renewal", which catches the rest.
Recurring payments accumulate quietly, and monthly-only checking misses the annual ones entirely. A full year's review is the only way to see everything, and almost everyone who does it finds something.
Step by step
- Download twelve months of statements.Every account and card. Annual subscriptions charge once a year, so a one-month review misses them entirely — and they are usually the largest.
- Sort by merchant rather than by date. Most banking apps or a spreadsheet can group by payee. Recurring amounts become obvious immediately.
- Check both app stores.Subscriptions bought through a phone are managed there. This is where forgotten ones most often hide, particularly from apps long since deleted.
- Search your email."Your subscription", "renewal", "receipt", "your plan", "welcome to". It surfaces services you no longer even recognise the name of.
- Check the direct debit list at your bank.Separate from card payments. Banks list active direct debits and standing orders in one place.
- Look for duplicates. Two music services, overlapping cloud storage, a streaming service also included in a bundle you pay for. Duplication is common and easy to miss.
- Decide on each: keep, cancel, or downgrade. Not everything needs cancelling. A lower tier or an annual plan often costs meaningfully less for the same use.
- Record renewal dates somewhere.A calendar reminder a week before each annual renewal. It converts an automatic charge into a decision.
Tips
- Do this once a year, at a fixed time. The same subscriptions accumulate again otherwise.
- A virtual card or a separate account for subscriptions makes them visible in one place permanently.
- Check what is bundled with things you already pay for — mobile contracts, bank accounts and broadband often include services people also pay for separately.
Questions people ask
Why can I not find where a subscription came from?
It was probably bought through an app store, or the merchant name on the statement is a parent company. Check both app stores and search the exact merchant string.
How often should I check?
Once a year, reviewing a full twelve months. Annual subscriptions are invisible in a monthly check and are usually the biggest ones.
