Is a brushless drill worth the extra money?

Short answer

Brushless motors run cooler, waste less of the battery as heat and have no wearing carbon brushes, so they last longer and give more work per charge. For a tool you use most weekends, that is worth paying for. For a drill that comes out four times a year, a brushed tool will very likely outlive your interest in it.

A brushed motor uses two sprung carbon blocks rubbing on a spinning commutator to switch the current. It works, it is cheap, and it wastes energy as friction and heat while slowly grinding the brushes away. A brushless motor does the switching electronically, so nothing rubs. Everything claimed for brushless follows from that one change.

  1. Take the runtime claim seriously.Less energy wasted as heat means more of the pack's charge reaches the workpiece. The improvement is real and typically substantial on sustained work, though on short bursts of light drilling you will barely notice.
  2. Take the lifespan claim seriously too.Carbon brushes are a wearing part. On a brushed tool used hard they are the usual cause of the drill dying, and on most cheap tools they are not replaceable. A brushless motor has nothing equivalent to wear out.
  3. Notice the heat difference under load.A brushed drill driving a long screw gets hot fast and the smell of hot varnish is the motor complaining. Brushless tools tolerate sustained heavy work far better, which matters on decking, fencing or a full day of anything.
  4. Value the electronics, not just the motor.Brushless tools carry a controller, and manufacturers put their better features there: electronic clutches, kickback detection, soft start, better speed control at low trigger. Some of those are worth more than the motor itself.
  5. Be honest about your usage.Occasional light DIY does not accumulate motor hours. A brushed drill from a decent maker, used a few times a year, will very plausibly still be working in fifteen years, and no amount of efficiency changes that.
  6. Weigh it against a second battery.If the budget is fixed, a brushed tool with two decent packs often beats a brushless tool with one small pack. Waiting for a charger is a bigger real-world problem than motor efficiency.
  7. Do not pay the premium on the wrong tool.Brushless matters most where the tool works hard and continuously — circular saws, grinders, impact drivers, mowers. On a drill used for pilot holes it matters least.

Tips

  • Brushless tools are usually shorter nose to tail than the brushed equivalent, because the motor is more compact. In a kitchen carcass that is a practical benefit in itself.
  • If a brushed drill has slowed down and sparks visibly through the vents, the brushes are worn. On some better tools they are a replaceable part costing very little.
  • Ignore any comparison of a brushless tool against a brushed one from a different brand and price bracket. It is measuring the brand, not the motor.

Common mistakes

  • Treating brushless as a quality guarantee — It describes one component. A budget brushless tool with a poor chuck, a vague clutch and a weak battery is still a poor tool.
  • Buying brushless and pairing it with the smallest battery in the range — A small pack limits current, which is where the tool's advantage under load comes from. You pay for capability and then choke it.

Questions people ask

Do brushless tools need servicing?

Less than brushed ones, but not none. They still fill with dust, and blocked vents will cook the electronics as readily as they cook a motor. Blow them out.

Is brushless quieter?

Usually a little, and different in character — less of the brush whine. On an impact driver the noise is the mechanism, not the motor, so it makes almost no difference.

Can I replace the brushes on a brushed drill?

On many mid-range and trade tools yes, and they are cheap. On budget tools the motor is often sealed and the tool is a write-off when the brushes go.
