What is the difference between a mild hybrid, a full hybrid and a plug-in?
Four quite different technologies are all sold as hybrids. What each one actually does, which journeys each suits, and the one that costs people money when it does not fit their driving.

Short answer
A mild hybrid cannot drive on electricity at all — it assists the engine and smooths stop-start. A full hybrid can drive short distances on electricity and charges itself; you never plug it in. A plug-in hybrid has a bigger battery, a useful electric range of a few tens of miles, and has to be plugged in to make sense. A range-extender is essentially electric with a small engine acting as a generator.
The word hybrid has been stretched across four technologies that behave very differently, and the marketing does not help because all of them are described in terms of efficiency gains. The practical differences come down to two questions: can it move the car on electricity alone, and does it need plugging in? Those two questions separate the four types cleanly, and they also determine which one will actually save you money — because a plug-in hybrid that is never plugged in is simply a heavy petrol car.

Predictable short commute with home charging plus occasional long trips — a plug-in is the case it was designed for.
- Look at real consumption figures, not just the official ones.Official figures for plug-in hybrids assume a full battery at the start of the test cycle, which produces headline numbers that are unreachable in ordinary use. Owner-reported figures are far more useful for this class of car than for any other.
Common mistakes
- Buying a plug-in hybrid without a way to charge it — It combines the running costs of a heavy petrol car with the purchase price of an electrified one. The benefit exists only if the battery is regularly full.
- Assuming any hybrid is exempt from emissions charges — Clean air zone compliance depends on the engine's Euro standard. A hybrid with an older engine can be non-compliant, and the checker is the only reliable answer.

Cause: The electric motor contributes least at steady high speed — Fix: This is inherent, not a fault. Full hybrids are optimised for stop-start driving where regeneration and electric-only running are frequent.
Engine runs constantly in a hybrid in winter
Cause: The engine is being used to heat the cabin — Fix: Common and normal on full hybrids. It is one reason winter economy drops noticeably even on a self-charging hybrid.
Battery warning or reduced hybrid function on an older car
Cause: Ageing traction battery — Fix: Get it diagnosed by a specialist. Hybrid batteries can often be repaired at module level rather than replaced whole, which is far cheaper, and this is worth asking about before accepting a replacement quote.
Considering a used plug-in hybrid with no charging cable
Cause: Cables frequently go missing — Fix: Budget for a replacement and check which connector it uses. A plug-in without a cable cannot do the thing it exists to do.

Do full hybrids need plugging in?
No. They generate all their own electricity from the engine and from braking. That is where the term self-charging comes from, and it is why they need nothing at all from the owner.
Are hybrids more expensive to service?
Not usually, and in some respects less — regenerative braking means brake pads and discs often last much longer. The traction battery is the significant long-term item, and warranties on those are typically longer than the general vehicle warranty.
Which is best for someone doing high motorway mileage?
Hybrids of all kinds gain least at steady high speed, because there is little braking to recover and the engine is already near its efficient range. For very high motorway mileage the comparison is more usefully between an efficient diesel, an efficient petrol and a full electric car with a long range.
