Should I turn on HDR on my computer, and why does it look washed out?
Turning HDR on frequently makes the desktop look worse — greyer, flatter, oddly bright. That is not a fault, it is what the setting does to ordinary content, and there is a specific control for it.

Short answer
Turn it on only if your monitor genuinely has the brightness and contrast to do something with it, and mainly for films and games rather than for everyday work. If the desktop looks washed out afterwards, find the setting that controls how ordinary non-HDR content is shown while HDR is on, and adjust it until the desktop matches how it looked before. On an ordinary monitor, leaving HDR off is a perfectly good answer.
High dynamic range means a screen showing a wider range between its darkest and brightest points than the old standard allowed, so a bright highlight can genuinely be bright rather than just white. On a capable screen with material made for it, the effect is real and worth having. The trouble is that switching it on changes how the computer handles everything else too. Your desktop, your browser, your documents and almost every photograph you own were made for the old standard, and once HDR is enabled they have to be translated into the new one. That translation is where the washed-out grey look comes from, and it is a settings problem rather than a defect.

- Find out whether your monitor can do anything useful with it first.HDR asks for real brightness and real contrast. A screen that accepts an HDR signal but cannot produce a much brighter highlight than an ordinary one will show you a differently-processed picture rather than a better one. Look up your specific model's stated peak brightness and whether it has any form of local dimming. This is the honest deciding factor, and a great many monitors sold as HDR-capable are only capable of accepting the signal.

- Buying a monitor for its HDR label — Accepting an HDR signal and being able to display one well are entirely different things, and the label does not distinguish them. Peak brightness and some form of local dimming are what actually produce the effect.
- Leaving it on and turning the monitor's brightness up to compensate — You are fighting the mapping with the wrong control, and on many monitors the brightness control is disabled in HDR mode anyway. Use the operating system's ordinary-content setting.
- Never running the calibration — Without it the system is guessing at your screen's limits, so highlights get clipped to flat white and shadow detail disappears. It is a few minutes and it is the difference between the feature working and not.
If it doesn't work
The desktop looks grey and flat after enabling it
Cause: Ordinary content is being mapped into HDR at the default setting — Fix: Adjust the operating system's control for non-HDR content brightness until the desktop matches how it looked before. This is what the control is for and it is the fix, not a workaround.
Everything is far too bright and eye-watering
Cause: The monitor's HDR picture mode, not the computer — Fix: Open the monitor's own menu after the signal has switched to HDR and go through its brightness, contrast and picture mode. Many sets apply a maximum-brightness profile automatically.
Colours are oversaturated
Cause: A wide-gamut picture mode applied to ordinary content — Fix: Look for a colour space or picture mode setting in the monitor's menu and choose the standard rather than the vivid or cinema option. Some graphics drivers have an equivalent setting.
Screenshots look wrong when sent to other people
Cause: A screenshot of an HDR desktop captures HDR data that other systems display incorrectly — Fix: Known and unavoidable while HDR is on. If you share screenshots regularly, that is a genuine argument for leaving it off during working hours.
HDR is not offered at all
Cause: The connection, the graphics driver, or the monitor's port setting — Fix: Check the monitor's port-mode setting first, then the cable, then update the graphics driver. HDR needs bandwidth, and the same limits that cap refresh rate apply here.
Video looks right but games look wrong, or the reverse
Cause: Games and video players handle HDR independently of the desktop — Fix: Many games have their own HDR calibration screen and it needs setting separately. A game set up on a different monitor will look wrong on this one.

Why does HDR look so much better on my television than on my monitor?
Televisions are generally built to be much brighter and to control their backlight in zones, which is precisely what HDR needs. Desktop monitors are usually designed for close viewing in a lit room, and many trade peak brightness for other qualities. It is a hardware difference rather than a settings one.
Does HDR use more power or more bandwidth?
More of both. It carries more information per pixel, which is why it can be unavailable at combinations of resolution and refresh rate that work without it, and it drives the backlight harder, which uses more power and generates more heat.
Should I use HDR for photo editing?
Not unless you specifically know you need it and have calibrated for it. Ordinary photo work is done in the standard range, most people viewing your photographs are on standard screens, and editing inside an HDR pipeline on an uncalibrated monitor makes it harder rather than easier to judge what you are doing.
Is auto-HDR the same thing?
