How do I glue MDF and chipboard edges so they actually hold?

Both boards drink glue out of the joint through their cut edges, so the standard PVA technique that works on timber gives a starved, weak joint here.

Short answer

Size the cut edge first: brush on glue thinned with a little water, let it soak in and go tacky, then apply full-strength glue and assemble. On chipboard, add a mechanical fixing as well, because the surface layer of a chipboard edge will pull away from the core whatever the adhesive.

MDF and chipboard are made of particles held together by resin, and a cut edge is an open network of those particles. Glue applied to it wicks straight in, away from the surface, leaving a dry joint face with the adhesive somewhere inside the board. The joint then fails at the interface and takes a layer of board with it, which is why the failure looks like the board disintegrating rather than the glue letting go.

Step by step

  1. Check the edge is sound before gluing anything.A chipboard edge that has been wet has swollen and lost its bond internally, and no adhesive will restore it. If the edge crumbles under a fingernail, cut back to sound material or replace the piece.
  2. Size the cut edge with thinned glue.Brush on PVA thinned with roughly ten to twenty per cent water. It soaks into the open particles and seals them. Leave it until it is tacky rather than dry — five to ten minutes is usually about right.
  3. Then apply full-strength glue to both faces.The sized edge is now closed, so the second application stays where you put it and forms a proper film. Skipping the sizing step is what gives a starved joint that looks glued and is not.
  4. Assemble and clamp with even, moderate pressure.Firm enough to close the joint and get a fine line of squeeze-out, not so hard that you crush the board. Both materials compress under a clamp and stay compressed, which shows as a dent in the finished surface.
  5. Add a mechanical fixing on chipboard.Biscuits, dowels or a confirmat screw into the core. Chipboard's edge strength is genuinely low and a glued-only edge joint in it should be treated as an alignment aid, not a structural connection.
  6. Consider polyurethane where the edge is damaged.Polyurethane adhesive foams into the open structure and fills small voids, which suits a slightly crumbly edge better than PVA does. Clamp firmly, because the foaming will push the joint apart if you do not.
  7. Seal MDF edges before finishing them.The same porosity that drinks glue drinks paint. Seal with thinned PVA, a dedicated MDF sealer or a coat of thinned primer, sand lightly, and only then finish.
  8. Wipe squeeze-out off immediately.On MDF particularly, dried glue on the face seals the board against paint and shows as a shiny patch through the finish. A damp cloth while it is wet costs nothing; sanding it off later damages the face.

Tips

  • MDF face-to-face bonds are strong and predictable — it is only the cut edges that are the problem. Design so the load goes through faces where you can.
  • Aliphatic wood glue is slightly better than ordinary white PVA here because it is thicker and does not wick as readily.
  • Never use MDF or standard chipboard anywhere it can get wet. Moisture-resistant grades exist and are worth the difference in a kitchen or a utility.
  • A screw into an unreinforced chipboard edge strips readily. If a fixing has to go into an edge, use a confirmat screw with its correct pilot, or set a dowel and screw into that.
  • Dust from cutting either board is fine and unpleasant. Cut outdoors or extract at the tool, and vacuum rather than brush.

Common mistakes

  • Gluing an MDF edge exactly like a timber edge — The glue disappears into the board and the joint is dry before the clamps are on. Sizing is the whole difference.
  • Over-clamping — Both boards compress permanently. The joint closes, the surface dents, and the dent shows through paint.
  • Relying on glue alone in a chipboard carcass — The board's own edge strength is the limit, not the adhesive's. Mechanical fixings carry the load; glue stops racking and squeaking.

Why does my MDF joint keep failing at the edge?

The glue soaked into the cut edge and left the joint face dry. Size the edge with thinned glue first, let it go tacky, then glue normally.

Can I use superglue on MDF?

It wicks in and disappears in the same way, and it sets far too fast to allow assembly. It has a use for tacking a small part in place while a real adhesive cures, and no more.

What holds best in a chipboard flat-pack carcass?
