How do I fix a handrail securely to a plasterboard wall?
Why a handrail is different from every other wall fixing, how to find the timber it has to reach, and what to do when the studs are not where the brackets need to be.

Short answer
Every bracket must land in solid timber — a stud, a noggin, or a continuous timber backing rail fixed to the studs. Find the studs, set the rail out so the brackets fall on them, and where they cannot, fix a backing batten across the studs first and mount the brackets to that. No cavity fixing is acceptable.
A handrail carries loads that no other domestic wall fixing sees: sudden, sideways, downwards and applied by a person who is already falling. The load also arrives as a shock rather than a steady weight, which is precisely the case that cavity fixing ratings do not describe. That is why the answer here is more conservative than for almost anything else you fix to a wall.

Step by step
- Find and mark every stud along the run.Detector plus tapping, or a magnet to find the board screws on a steel-framed wall. Mark the centre of each stud on masking tape above the rail line so the marks survive the setting-out.
- Set the rail line out.On stairs the rail follows the pitch line of the nosings at the height the regulations require, and it should be continuous. Snap a chalk line or mark from a long straight edge — a rail that wanders is obvious from across the room.
- Position the brackets on the studs wherever you can.Slide bracket positions along the rail so they land on studs. Bracket spacing has a maximum for the rail's stiffness, but within that there is usually room to move.
- Where a bracket cannot reach a stud, fit a backing rail.A continuous timber batten, screwed into every stud along the run, with the brackets then fixed to the batten. This is the standard solution, it looks deliberate, and it means bracket positions become free.
- Check for services before every hole.Staircase walls carry cables to landing lights and switches. Detector first, at every position.
- Drill pilot holes and use long screws.The screw needs real penetration into the stud — substantially more than the board thickness. Pilot so the screw does not split the stud edge, and drive it fully home.
- Load-test every bracket before you trust the rail.Put real weight on it — hang off it, push down and sideways at each bracket. Anything that moves at all is a bracket that has not reached timber.
- Fill and make good afterwards, not before.Resolve any bracket that failed the test before decorating, because a filled and painted wall makes it far harder to move a fixing.
Tips
- If the wall is being boarded from scratch, put a continuous timber backing behind the whole rail line. It costs very little at that stage and removes the problem permanently.
- Grab rails in a bathroom or by a toilet are the same problem — they are load-bearing safety fittings and cavity fixings are not adequate for them either.
- On a stairwell, take a photograph of the framing before boarding. Finding studs behind a decorated stairwell wall later is genuinely awkward.
Common mistakes
- Fixing brackets on spring toggles because the studs did not line up — The rail will feel completely solid to a hand test and let go under a fall load, which is the one moment it is needed. Fit a backing rail instead.
- One bracket in a stud and the next in board — The board-fixed bracket becomes the weak link and the whole rail is only as strong as it. All brackets or none.

Are handrails covered by building regulations?
In a dwelling, staircases have requirements covering handrail provision, height and continuity, and they are set nationally — England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland each publish their own. Check the current guidance for your nation before setting out, particularly on a new or altered staircase.
What if the wall is masonry behind the plaster?
That is a much easier job — but check by drilling a test hole, because dot-and-dab plasterboard over blockwork feels hollow and is not a stud wall. It needs a long plug reaching the block behind.
