How do I make a room feel warmer without turning the heating up?

Comfort depends on draughts, surfaces and humidity as much as air temperature — and all three are cheaper to change.

Short answer

Close the curtains at dusk, stop the draughts, and put something on the floor. How warm a room feels depends on moving air and cold surfaces as much as on the thermostat reading.

Thermal comfort is not the same as air temperature. A room at 19°C with no draughts and warm surfaces feels better than one at 21°C with a cold window and air moving across the floor — and the first is much cheaper.

Step by step

  1. Close the curtains at dusk.Glass is the coldest surface in most rooms and radiates heat away from you. Lined curtains closed at dusk make a measurable difference and cost nothing. Open them again in daylight for the solar gain.
  2. Stop the draughts you can feel.Moving air removes heat from skin directly. Door brushes, letterbox brush, sealing round window frames, and blocking an unused chimney with a proper chimney balloon.
  3. Put something on a hard floor.A rug with underlay. Cold feet make the whole body feel cold regardless of air temperature, and bare floors over an unheated void are the coldest surface you touch.
  4. Reduce the humidity.Damp air feels colder and conducts heat away faster. Ventilate while cooking and showering, dry washing where the moisture can escape, and deal with any condensation.
  5. Move the furniture off cold external walls.Sitting against a cold wall means it radiates heat away from you all evening. Moving a sofa a few centimetres also prevents mould behind it.
  6. Use the radiator properly.Nothing in front of it, no long curtains over it, nothing on top. And check it is actually hot all over — see the radiator guides if it is not.
  7. Warm the person rather than the room.A heated throw uses a fraction of the electricity of any heater and is far more effective for sitting still. This is the single cheapest comfort improvement available.
  8. Close doors and heat the rooms you use.Shutting internal doors keeps heat where you are. Turning down the radiators in unused rooms is free and it makes the used ones warmer.

Tips

  • Thick lined curtains that reach below the window sill are far more effective than short ones. A curtain that stops at the sill lets cold air spill underneath.
  • A draught excluder at the bottom of the living room door costs almost nothing and is noticeable the same evening.
  • If a room never feels warm regardless, the underlying issue is insulation or a heating problem rather than comfort — those guides address the cause.

Questions people ask

Why does my room feel cold at a normal temperature?

Cold window and wall surfaces radiate heat away from you, moving air removes it from your skin, and damp air conducts it faster. All three are separate from the thermostat reading.

What is the cheapest way to feel warmer?

Closing lined curtains at dusk, stopping draughts, and a heated throw for sitting still. All three cost very little and work immediately.
